Home runs kept Notre Dame in the game Sunday at Eck Stadium. A five-run sixth inning without the longball allowed the Irish to hold on for a 12-8 home victory over Florida State and another ACC series win.
Notre Dame (25-17, 13-11) scored 12 runs in a victory for the second straight day against former coach Link Jarrett's Seminoles (15-27, 6-18).
A three-run home run by right fielder Brooks Coetzee gave the Irish a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth after first baseman Carter Putz and catcher Vinny Martinez each hit solo homers in the first two innings, respectively.
Florida State tied the game at five in the top of the fifth with a James Ferrer RBI double off right-hander Caden Spivey.
Putz put Notre Dame back in front with another home run, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the fifth. Then the Irish padded their lead with a two-RBI single by shortstop Zack Prajzner, an RBI single by Putz, and two-RBI single by Coetzee in the sixth.
Florida State threatened to pull closer when a two-RBI double by Colton Vincent cut Notre Dame's lead to 12-8 with two runners on base. But Ryan Lynch replaced reliever Matt Bedford to record the final out of the eighth inning with a strikeout of leadoff hitter DeAmez Ross.
The combined RBI total from Coetzee (five) and Putz (four) was enough to outscore Florida State.
Starter Carter Bosch navigated a tough 2 1/3 innings by surrendering four earned runs on four hits and two walks. Spivey earned the victory with 4 2/3 innings pitched with only two earned runs allowed on four hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Sammy Cooper finished the game with a scoreless ninth inning.
Notre Dame is scheduled to host Bowling Green (15-25) on Tuesday before NC State (28-14, 8-12) visits for a three-game series starting Thursday.
