Notre Dame let us watch the first 30 minutes of practice today, which was largely stretching and individual drill work. We did get some snippets from 11-on-0 routes on air, though.
• Jack Coan was the first-team quarterback, unsurprisingly. Freshman Blake Fisher was back practicing after clearing the concussion protocol and working at first-team left tackle. Zeke Correll (LG), Jarrett Patterson (C), Cain Madden (RG) and Josh Lugg (RT) joined him, just like the last time we could watch.
• Coan clearly commands the offense as QB1. Now that Brian Kelly has made it official, you can get a sense just being around the team in a practice setting that Coan has the utmost respect from the entire roster. Kelly did not spend much time speaking individually to any quarterbacks in the previous practices we watched, but he was seen chatting intently with Coan on Tuesday.
• RB Kyren Williams, RB Chris Tyree, TE Michael Mayer, TE George Takacs, WR Kevin Austin Jr., WR Avery Davis, WR Joe Wilkins Jr. and WR Braden Lenzy were first-team skill players.
• Drew Pyne took second-team work. His offensive line, left to right: Michael Carmody, Rocco Spindler, Andrew Kristofic, John Dirksen, Tosh Baker. WRs were Deion Colzie, Lawrence Keys III, Matt Salerno and Lorenzo Styles Jr. TEs were Mitchell Evans and Cane Berrong. Logan Diggs and C’Bo Flemister were working at RB.
• Tyler Buchner was the third-team QB. His OL, left to right: Caleb Johnson, Quinn Murphy, Pat Coogan, Quinn Carroll, Joe Alt. He mainly threw to walk-ons, but Audric Estime was in the backfield.
• Clarence Lewis and Cam Hart appear to be solidified as the two starters on the outside at corner. TaRiq Bracy worked mostly at nickel last week, but he lined up alongside Ramon Henderson in individual drills. Where players line up in those is usually a pretty good indicator of where they stand in the depth chart hierarchy, so that duo could make up the second-team corners.
• DE Justin Ademilola returned to practice after battling a nagging injury. There were a handful or more players training with the athletic staff off to the side, including one wearing a walking boot, but they were unidentifiable without jersey numbers on. Cornerback Ryan Barnes was one. Kelly could provide an injury report when he speaks to the media after Thursday’s practice.
• It’s difficult to glean much from a defensive perspective when position groups are working individually, but the usual defensive standouts were out in full force. Kyle Hamilton led the safeties, Drew White took charge of the linebackers. DE Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa returned from Hawaii where he spent time with his family to mourn the unexpected loss of his father last week. That trio made up three of Notre Dame’s seven team captains, which were announced late last week.
• We saw Jonathan Doerer get some kicking practice in after stretching against a full field-goal block unit. He was solid overall and was attempting kicks from around 40 yards. I saw one miss. Michael Vinson was snapping and Jay Bramblett holding, like last season.
