14. Notre Dame
Reason for Optimism: After a disappointing 4-8 record in 2016, the Fighting Irish got back on track with a 10-win season in ’17. The offense needs more consistency from its starting quarterback, but there are options here with the return of Brandon Wimbush, Ian Book and incoming freshman Phil Jurkovec. Josh Adams leaves big shoes to fill at running back, but Dexter Williams should be a capable replacement. The defense is under the direction of new coordinator Clark Lea but took a step forward last fall and could be even better in 2018.
Reason for Concern: Will the Fighting Irish find a clear answer under center this offseason? Also, who steps up on the line to replace standouts Quenton Nelson and Mike McGlinchey? Last year’s leading receiver (Equanimeous St. Brown) left early for the NFL as well.
