an 8-4 season ,another so - so year ? And will Swarbrick support Kelly giving the line,"We have shown improvement," then next year have another ho-hum 2018. Mediocrity in football .The AD and the administration accepting this? Last few years ,my opinion is, Kelly can not bring us back . No longer relevant. Need a dynamic coach.

We're 1-1.

What do you mean "are die Hards going to accept"?

What do you suggest I do? Protest in front of the golden dome? Organize a sit-in at ND Stadium? Flood Jack with angry emails? We're all just fans here. Support the team or don't.

Me......I'll support like I always do: go to 1 or 2 games. Watch every game on TV. Be optimistic that they'll win just about every week. Buy my nephews ND jerseys at Christmas.

I'm crushed when they lose. That said, if they're 8-4, life will go on.

Perspective is not an attribute valued by many on this board.

I would imagine I'm one of the "newer" fans here since '86 was my first year truly following Irish football as a good catholic boy living in the south. I haven't missed a game on TV since including the national championship game when I was in Sydney, AU on vacation scouring every bar to finally find a TV that could meet my demand. Every year I come in with some expectation on how things will play out and this year was no different. I think we all understand some of the deficiencies this team has (primarily with defensive talent) so I'm not going to sit here and say I expected an undefeated season. I do expect to see this team improve week over week and if that translates to 8-4 than so be it. I will be disappointed and crushed after every defeat but fixing a team that went 4-8 is not an easy task.

Back to your original ask on Kelly, I actually see a lot of parallels between what we are going through and what UGA went through with Richt a few years back (my wife is a UGA grad and she was a staunch supporter of the coach up until the last season). Now the tale of Kirby is still very much in the air after an 8-5 season but initial reaction after the ND game is that the move is paying dividends. Can our fortunes change with new leadership? I'm sure that's a possibility but I'll be the first to admit that every coaching change since Davie had me excited and that hasn't done much for us.

IMHO the so-called 'die-hard fans' will continue to expect ND to (actually) compete for and ultimately win a NC Title ( in 2012 ND 'participated' in the NC title game.......don't think the word 'compete' would accurately describe how they played ).

ND cannot seem to get it right - comparing Kelly's average numbers of Ws - Ls over his first 7 years to Weis' average numbers of Ws - Ls over his 5 years tenure - Kelly is barely a better coach (in terms of average Ws vs. average Ls per season). And Happy Jack spent multiple millions on Weis' contract buy-out to get barely an improvement from Kelly?

Then again - ND hired Swarbrick - an inexperienced AD - why?....because he is a ND alum? He - like his coach - has not significantly improved the fortunes of the football program

I realize we are 1-1 but, games like this need to be won. At home. National TV. Good, not great SEC program. This is year eight. Games like this need to be won IMHO.

It is year 1 all over. This is a new staff so it is a new beginning. Rebuild year 1 of a 5 year rebuilding plan.

What other choice is there ? You're a fan or you're not. None of us here have any say so in who is or isn't the coach or the athletic director or the waterboy for that matter. Hold your breath, stomp your feet or have another hissy fit. Won t make a bit of difference.

If Kelly isnt gone after this year in five years this program will be so insignificant the only conference they will be joining is the Ivy League.

To answer the questions of the post, will Swarbrick keep Kelly if the Irish go 8-4? Unless the 4 losses are lopsided, I believe Kelly will still be here. The Irish appear (very early in the season to say this) to be better coached and conditioned than last year. The Irish also have a potential stunning class coming in this year (Please get Booker). As to what the Irish fans will do? The same thing they've always done. Some will voice discontent more than others, but most will be hopeful that the next year will bring noticeable improvement. ND is a special place and has special fans. I say this because the Irish compete in an environment where they have a disadvantage in the most important aspect of football - Recruiting. Players are actually expected to go to class and learn at ND. Fans know this and yet they have chosen the Irish as their team. ND stands for what's right in college sports and they do it on the biggest stage. I am an Irish fan, and I will always pull for the Irish, win or lose. I can't help myself. Go Irish!

The thing is the die heart fans don't matter It's what I call the rah rah fans ND. cares about. These are the fans where the game isn't the event it's the social gathering, tail gating and parties. They will always show up to the games buy ND gear and so on

You Kelly lovers are a gang of thugs who will not accept any dissention. I know...I used to be one of you cats.

This discussion doesn't really bother me. It's true it has no affect on anything within the program, but discuss, complain, cheer, and debate is what fans do all over the world. I guess it's a right of passage.

Guess my post went completely over your head. Then again you likely have an overinflated sense of self worth and think your complaining matters. Who are you today ? Good bodi or psycho bodi ?

I don't see Kelly getting fired even with lopsided losses to USC, Stanford, Miami and the loss to GA. We played this game all last year...nothing changes and who the hell do we even get if he goes?

I don't judge things on records alone...I've witnessed very overrated 11-1 teams and seen very solid 8-4 teams.

I care more about the direction the program is heading....Are we improving each week on both sides of the ball? Are the younger guys showing signs of development? Are we landing the type of recruits that we want that fit the schemes we utilize?

At the moment, I am happy at 1-1 because I see Elko's hiring already starting to pay off.

This is year eight. The defense is trending up. Who knows about the OL. Key players were missing in a key game. Two phases of the Special Teams unit are ranked among the worst. This is BK's team. His eighth. These are his players. These are his coaches. The stadium is what he wanted. BVG was his hire. Fans are not stupid. They see. They are much more informed now than 20-30 years ago. Yet another year of waiting to see the team improve week to week. I am not calling for his dismissal, but my patience is wearing thin.

People won't be thrilled with 8-4 but it won't get Kelly fired. ND was 4-8 in 2016, so it would be a marked improvement.

The best chance IMO for canning Kelly prior to next season rests in the lawsuits that the school is now facing.

How would that get Kelly fired? Was the athletic department even involved in that issue?

I couldn't agree more with Toby's post. Coaches evolve but their core doesn't change all that much which is why I'm so conflicted with Kelly. My patience was tested after the UGA game because it was such a winnable game and as a former athlete those are the ones that bothered me the most. We've had so many of these games over the past few years which is paramount to the frustration of the fans. This is not a good BC team but they will play hard against ND like they normally do. Nonetheless they should beat them handily with MSU providing us the litmus test on whether they have turned the corner and if we are prepared to battle SC and Stanford.

You mean those same "die hard" fans that sold 40,000 tickets to Georgia fans?

A lot of Cincinnati fans didn't like the way Kelly exited the Bear program in 2012 .
I was wondering .Did Kelly have any discussions with the Eagles in 2012 about the head coaching position prior to the Championship game?

Point ,Kelly has no real allegiance to ND . Really wanted to move on Pro teams have since cooled to the idea of hiring Kelly even though he had a decent 2015 year .
Looks like Kelly is in a place where he doesn't want to be . That is disturbing .There are good college coaches would love to be at ND. Some major colleges programs would take a long look before hiring Brian.

I don't think anyone actually knows the answer to that. Safe to say that his agent had already talked to them.

I appreciate the venting, but at this point all of us are just along for the ride
The lrish are just lost a 1 point game to a quality opponent.
I don't remember anyone, but Bodi believing the Irish were w/o doubt going to win

A 9- 10 win season isn't that unrealistic..but neither is a 7 win season. It's a little too early in the season to panic Let's let it play out a couple more weeks.

Opponents seen what Georgia did to force the Irish hand. Kelly's staff will be hard pressed, and at this point the defense has keep the Irish respectable.

I was watching Cowturd (not by choice) playing the conference talk being NDs saving grace, and only showing bad plays by the Irish to make his point ..... speaking of fake news

Let's see what thing look like against BC
