Notre Dame Holds Off Hawaii, 48-42
December 01, 1991|Associated Press
    • This was the last team the Irish played before the great Cheerios bowl win over Florida with the great Jerome Bettis. The Irish played no defense and barely beat a team they should have blown out.
    • Such is college football... Read this and learn Perse and cgvr and quit your BITCHING ABOUT THE TEMPLE GAME ~!! TEMPLE WAS UNDEFEATED AND RANKED YOU FOOLS !! IT WAS A GOOD WIN LIKE ANY WIN IS !!

    • HONOLULU — Tony Brooks and Jerome Bettis scored two touchdowns apiece as 18th-ranked Notre Dame outlasted Hawaii for a 48-42 victory Saturday night in a game with nearly 1,000 yards in offense.

Trailing 48-28 after Bettis scored his second touchdown on a two-yard run with 5:15 left, the Rainbows (4-7-1) scored two late touchdowns, with reserve quarterback Ivin Jasper leading the charge.

Jasper scored on a 31-yard run with 3:42 left and Hawaii recovered an onsides kick at its 49. Seven plays later, Jasper passed seven yards to Eddie Kealoha for a touchdown with 1:38 left.

But Notre Dame (9-3) recovered Hawaii's ensuing onsides kick and ran out the clock.

The Irish amassed 499 yards in total offense, but surrendered 473 yards to the scrappy Rainbows.

Irish quarterback Rick Mirer completed 12 of 19 passes for 218 yards and receiver Tony Smith had a career-high nine catches for 140 yards.

Nice try.... I didn't bitch about the temple game. I accurately wrote that porky was outcoached by Rhule. He was also outclassed and out coached in the bc, va.....games. He stinks....
PS Did Holtz ever go to a lower tier bowl?
Music City champs.....yay for us....

Bodi, didn't your dad ever teach you? You can't reason with stupid! How can you reason with somebody who thinks Loserham or Davie was a better coach than Kelly? How can you reason with somebody who can't see beyond the stars beside a guy's name. Have you ever got stuck in the mud? Bodi, you're just wasting gas spinning those tires.

You're just a liar. I've never seen anyone on this board state that Willingham or Davie were better coaches than Mr Potato Head.

Keep building the straw men...it's all you got.

kelly stinks.

PS I did accurately point out that:

Prior to this year's draft kelly (4) is under performing willingham (4.66), davie (4.2) and outperforming weis (3.8) by .2 players selected in the NFL draft per annum.

He is almost 3 players per yer below Holtz (6.7)....

If he gets 6 players drafted this year he'll jump davie. With 8 he'll jump willingham.

Again, he stinks.

Well said Ara. The Kelly haters are losers. ND is so lucky to have Kelly at the helm.

Well said Ara. If someone hates ND as much as cvgr does, why bother following ND? He is very sad!

I was at the game and remember it well. UH ran an option running attack that ND just couldn't seem to stop. The UH QB, Ivin Jasper, is now the OC at the Naval Academy. The UH OC at that time was Paul Johnson, now the HC at Georgia Tech. At the time of the '92 game with the Irish, Ken Niumatalolo was working as a graduate assistant for Johnson. I am sure all those names are familiar to Irish fans. Johnson left UH a couple of years later to take the OC position at the Naval Academy, where Niumatololo and Jasper eventually followed him. They are basically running the same offense at the USNA that UH ran back in 1992.

At the time, UH had a reputation of beating (or at least giving a tough game to) marquee football programs from the mainland. They would come out to Hawaii for a couple of days of sun and sand and think they could just show up to the game and get a "W." UH had a scrappy team and ran a quirky offense that gave teams trouble. Even though the Irish were physically superior to the UH team, we were lucky to get out of there with a win.

John ..... while I don't have a dog in this fight and don't agree 100 percent with cvgr's take on Kelly I have to point out that I have seen no "ND hate" espoused by him. He simply thinks Kelly underachieves as ND's head coach. He thinks Kelly (not ND) stinks.

The only thing well said/entertaining ever from ara was his timeless droning about his upbringing.

"Ara was my surrogate father.... blah blah blah waaa waaa waaa"

That was the most "hysterical" posting on this site ever...

Small nit, I don't think it. I know it.

The guy lacks loyalty to my Alma Mater and should have been shown the door the minute "Eagles" came out of his mouth...

He's scheming to jump ship as I type, but no one wants him....

Lou fired Darnell and coached the defense for the Sugar Bowl against UF. Lou was one of the very few who was totally literate on both sides of the ball and could coordinate both sides of the ball better than anyone on the staff. He hired Minter and ND had elite defenses in 92 and 93.

ND's defenses were not dominate 94-96 because the personnel was not dominate. You dominate on defenses with future high draft pick NFL players on defense. EVERYWHERE. We have seen what Teo, Day, Lynch, Tuitt and J Smith can do.

Alabama plays 8 or 9 of those guys on defense every year. Every one on here talks "scheme" yet virtually no one here knows anything about scheme. Try the KISS principle. When ND is permitted to recruit elite defenders and play high round draft picks all over the field on defense. ND will play elite defense. Until then ND will have to continue scoring tons of points, play opportunistic defense, and catch a break on the injury front for a shot at the playoffs.

Could of happened last year but got decimated in the secondary before Stanford. The scheme to shut down McCaffery and the run worked perfectly. The players in back could not hold up in coverage.

Hey cgvr, didn't we have 4 turnovers a piece in both the Temple and BC games. You take away even half of those and those two games are blow outs. Also, against Va we lost our starting qb will almost a full half to play.

Your obsession with bashing Kelly is not only ridiculous but it's completely off base. You're obviously not a big college football fan or very knowledgeable about ND football because he's brought our program to the best point it's been since the early '90s. But go ahead and keep on bitching if it makes you feel good. By the way, when you call him Porky you sound like a 12 year old.

Didn' we get 95 scholarships when Lou was there? Wasn't it more common for kids to play 4 years? Are we limited to 20 hours a week of practice?

Hard to compare on draft picks and bowls. BK would be one of the top 5 coaches today on anyone's rating. Saban has no academic requirements to meet. How many championships did he win at MSU?

Not saying any of us are over joyed without a championship but unlike the coaches since Lou, I feel we have a chance in every game.

Mr. Potato Head doesn't understand ball control, power, intellectual and physical brutality. He's dumb as a rock.

He doesn't understand fundamental football math either. Again, the little porker's dumb.

Perhaps you can explain this...

But alas a thread for the galactically stupid and the 'mean girls'

Bodi, just pathetic. Continuous Biatch.

If you play a week schedule, you can be top rated like Baylor.....I'd look at head to head..last 5 years....

ND is 4-1 vs Dantonio with Kelly......Equal recruits...Seems like BK gets the nod there..

Lastly, please review the stats I provided and admit that porky stinks.
