A depressing Tuesday morning...

4-5 star players do make a difference. ND has (had ) better players than 90% of the teams we play or played in the past few years , but even when we won, we struggled against mediocre to average teams .That's been the scenario.

We are not recruiting well in 2017 but still are better than some of the teams we are playing

The style of play is what concerns me the most. Both Clemson and 'Bama prefer to attack and overwhelm their opponent as opposed to outsmarting their opponents.

I kept thinking last night that if ND was playing in the game it would've been a repeat of 2012. Even if ND executed BK's system perfectly, I'd worry about becoming what Oregon has been the past decade -- just an offensive power that can't get past a great defense.

I believe ND has the players to consistently win 10 games if they execute well. Consistently getting to the 12-14 win level would require more difference makers, especially in the defensive front 7.

Bama & OSU have 6 5 star recruits ...Clemson 3 .... difference makers all around.

I think last night at least signalled some proof of something that a lot of old timers and football purists have been fighting for some time. You can win a national championship without once lining up under center on a meaningful snap, playing with a fullback, using two tight ends sets, or running North / South as your primary means of attack.

Clemson's offense was everything Notre Dame fans hate about the way Brian Kelly runs his. Horizontal runs, run /pass options, vertical shots on the perimeter and jump balls to receivers... They just have a fantastic QB in Watson and two awesome targets in Leggett and Williams. Hell, they even have their own Chris Finke in Hunter Renfrow, who played an awesome game last night.

They also have better playcalling than we do, and a much better defense.

Not refuting that one bit. Nowhere have I stated that you don't need to play great defense to win a championship. That said, there has been thread after thread on this board talking about what ND "needs to do" on offense and those threads routinely talk about reverting back to an offensive style of thinking that has worked in the pass. My point is simply that with good coaching, great quarterbacking and proper execution, these modern spread offenss that stress putting athletes in space and forcing defenders to make very tough plays one on one, can be really successful

The spread can work, with the right athletes. The problem is we don't get those athletes across the board. Until ND gets back to a physical style of play (i.e running game), I just don't see us competing at the highest level (i.e for championships). JMHO

I'm not disputing that
I simply saying it's hard for any offense to work until the defense steps up, but the offense at ND has that spares the defense from being on the field all the time
I'm not saying it's easy, but the offense and defense must work together due to the limitations that a place like ND presents

Since the ND vs. Clemson game last year, the two programs have been on completely different paths on and off the field.
I don't dispute that for this year, MT. However, ND was less than a minute away last year from (possibly) being in the playoffs.

ND has had an abysmal D for a while and methinks it get worse before it gets better! Talent is wanting.
The offense while talented is undisciplined, one demensional, error prone and hampered by bad game plans and in game decisions.

A clusterf'n. Fubar.

Thanks to dynamite former Lions GM Matt Millen for your assessment of the program.

ND lost a lot of talent and leadership with players going pro in their junior year in 2016. ND is not a football factory and will suffer when that happens. So many games in 2016 were one score or less.

BK is fighting for his football life right now. He was not ready for the ND job but who is - right? I am looking forward to the 2017 season AND will make a prediction I have never made before - 13-1.

Are you basing this prediction on emotion?
Just curios because the Irish didn't finish the season in an upward projection. They are starting a new QB with a new OC, and the defense failed miserably in their last game and now the Irish will have a new DC coming from a team finishing 3-9.

You might have the correct digits; albeit in the wrong order!

Time will tell. I will always choose the best for ND.

I am excited to see Brandon Wimbush play (the next Deshone Watson?) and the new defense led by Nyles Morgan ! 2012 all over again ! I will not listen to the sewing circle !!
2016 was an outlier season for ND. I fully expect ND to get back on track this year with 10+ win seasons and have late-season shots at making the playoffs.

Elko is the big factor IMO. The defense has a bunch of studs--- they just need a leader. The sewing/knitting/Avon lady circle can't see anything past 4 and 8. We men will have to show them the way.

Defense wins championships - right? BK finally cut ties with his buds and sought out a championship staff. Now, let's see if he will get out of his own way and turn his horses loose.
