ok. Love LOU

Always have wondered why he was quiet as a mouse in 93 when the pollsters were deciding the NC. He could have and maybe should have lobbied n raised hell to build a case for us. I mean how can FSU be the best team in the Land when they have one loss and we have one loss and we beat FSU?????

The title was stolen from us. No doubt

So what do you think about Lou’s behavior?

My theory—- Bowden had never won a natty. Lou had his. Bowden and Lou were best friends
I met Bowden and had a deep one to one conversation. He loves ND and Lou

I believe Lou did the gentlemanly thing and let the cards fall rather than jeopardize his buddy’s chance of a natty

Under any other circumstance I see Lou lobbying hard

What say you 78 and others? I pick 78 cause he is steady and ND and rarely rocks the boat

What y’all think?

I have no inside info, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

I dont think Lou felt a need to lobby. he lost in 89 when they said head to head was the defining tiebreaker and I suspect he believed that would apply in 93

Wicker, you are correct. Even though ND beat Colorado in the Orange bowl in 90, they came in 2nd to Miami since they lost to them head to head. Go to 93, that same principal didn't apply. At the very least ND should have had a share of the 93 title with FSU. It never sat well with Lou. In fact I remember Lou making the comparison and he thought it wasn't fair.

I honestly don't remember whether Lou said anything or not. It was a mere 29 years ago, mind you. I do remember that ND beat A&M soundly in the Cotton Bowl on January 1, while FSU narrowly squeezed by # 1 Nebraska that night in the Orange Bowl. If my memory serves me correctly, the AP and UPI votes came out the next day, January 2, so that didn't give Lou a whole lot of time to say anything.

I think we edged Texas A&M with either a late TD or field goal to win.

But the damage was done after we lost to BC because we fell to #3 in polls, which meant we were shut out of the opportunity for a rematch.

You are correct. We beat A&M 24-21. I was thinking of the year before, when we beat them 28-3. FSU beat Nebraska 18-16.

Right, after the '92 season, we won handily.

My recollection was the FSU game with Nebraska being billed as for the NC. ND would have had to demolish A&M for the narrative to change, and we didn’t.

Ski, I like your interpretation better!
Thanks TelX. I truly think thT is why Lou was quiet. He had plenty of time prior to the Anm game to set or plead a case. He did not. I do seem to remember him mentioning the 89 situation and how that should be precedent. He likely wanted a share

It's a bit premature to make your case before you win the bowl game, don't you think?

In my opinion, Once the media hyped and declared the FSU vs Nebraska game as for the National Championship, there was nothing Holtz could say or do to elevate ND into that equation. But Ski is right, if the case was to be made, it had to be made before the games were played.

But that would have done nothing but create a lot of bulletin board material for A&M. You can't start claiming a championship before you play your last game.

Not claiming a championship, but arguing that you are still in contention for the championship. It all came down to what carried more import, identical records and the head to head win over FSU, or identical records and FSU’s last win being a win over Nebraska, the number one rated team. The Press decided a win over Nebraska carried more weight before the game was even played, and since the AP declared the NC in those days, we were out of contention before the two bowl games were played. Ski is arguing that a Holtz could have changed this narrative, but chose not to. All I remember is being pissed that the press made our bowl game meaningless in the NC decision.

The records were not identical. Florida State had an extra win. And played more end of year ranked teams. And had a higher overall MOV average.

It would have reflected poorly on Lou to argue for an NC before ND's final game was played. There is no question that ND was "still in contention for the championship." If we had beaten A&M badly, it might have been a different story. But, as HDK has pointed out, it was a close game.

Yes I do agree but that raises the question. Did Lou get blindsided as you suggest because there was like only a day or two before polls came out or did he just let Bowden have his day or did Lou just assume the 89 precedent would give him a share? I think it is the combination of the 2 latter scenarios

I would like to hear his view on this

It used to be considered poor sportsmanship for a coach to lobby the pollsters via the media. Urban Meyer was the first to break the gentlemen's agreement back in 2006.

Good point Ivan. That is exactly right

The Bowl Coalition didn't exist in 89 like it did in 93. Different scenario.

LOL. A football question and you failed miserably. ND did not beat A&M soundly you clown. Go take your geritol and then yell at the neighborhood kids to get off your lawn. Other than that, you are useless.

He’s got crabs. You’d wake up mad too
Plus isn’t he the guy who always talks about ND getting blown out because he never does?

Or is that his twin Pikehead?

How much longer until you are banned again?

23,600 posts. An, old nasty guy whose family can't stand him with too much time on his hands.

All those posts in 16 years. Big deal. If you didn't keep getting banned, you would have a lot of posts, too. Not that you ever say anything.
