Today’s national article on One Foot Down and SB Nation. Could not have summarized it any better. At least the nation is now seeing what we’ve been watching all season.

A little experienced Head Coach with a little experienced OC at a place that demands a lot of both. Really sad if you think about it because ND shouldn’t settle for anything. Yet they did on their most important sports hires.

After Gerry Faust nothing should surprise you!

With the CFB landscape, such as it is, and the built in restrictions, let's be honest, the ND head coaching job is not what it used to be. So yeah, yes we do settle, because a lot of the established coaches don't want the job.

Pretty much. As ND fans, we need to be realistic; without changes this program will never again realistically compete for a NC. As a life long, long time supporter, I now say, join a freaking conference and give the players, students, and fanbase something to compete for, at least a CC, instead of another season being over in early October. Oh sure, we'll get some BS exhibition bowl game, where several players will sit out, so who cares

With ND it is NC or bust. Once again we are in bust mode. Admin doesn't care as long as the $$ keeps rolling in and the players graduate. 9-4 or 8-5 is ok with the admin.

The Dr. Pepper commercial with the mascot leaving reminds me of ND. Girl says "we will always out recruit you". Mascot says "But we have higher academic standards" . I have to laugh every time I see that commercial.

B.S. That’s absolutely not true !

Compensation and an iconic brand make it a great job !

What changes would you make ?

Joining a conference doesn’t cure inept coaching !

Why is it that those who didn’t attend ND tend to advocate for joining a conference and lowering our academic standards ?

Neither of which is about to happen !

Its learning on the job......you think ND would if learned that in the CW years.......I'm pulling for Freeman, but my grip is slightly slipping

Then enjoy the season being over with two losses.

Tell me how joining a conference lowers academic standards?

There are very few head coaches who excel in both recruiting and in, well, coaching. Look at Cristobal in Miami. He was hired because the Canes knew he would lock up the local talent. They felt that was the key to bringing Miami back. ND and Freeman is a less extreme example of the same thing. Freeman was hired because of his fantastic recruiting potential. It was believed he would be able to learn on the job.

For all anyone knows, maybe he is learning on the job.

This exactly! Season is effectively over. Play in another meaningless bowl game where our best guys don’t play nor do the opponents, ( South Carolina last year was minus 10-12 starters). Or when we beat LSU minus Fornette and a host of other LSU players. We may win the “ scrimmage “ game and then we can delude ourselves once again to thinking we’re elite. Join a fkn conference and give the guys something to play for and the fans something to root for. Frankly this was our year, with tons of 5/6 yr guys, the rental qb and 2 toughest games at home. In the future it may be easier to make the playoffs but winning 3 games in a row vs top ten teams will be extremely challenging

You drew that conclusion not me.

Many are advocating for joining a conference and many are advocating for lowering the academic standards…….
I oppose both !

“Meaningless” for whom ?

Certainly not for the players and coaches !

Maybe for “fair weather fans”_

ND needs to get better coaches and players to compete for a national championship. I was pro-independent for a long time, but the CFB landscape has changed dramatically since the early 90s. ND needs to evolve quickly. I think ND would get better coaches and players competing in the SEC.

I’m a fan and it’s pretty meaningless to me. No chance at a natty, a playoff or a CCG. I guess I can rejoice if we topple the Stanford Cardinal juggernaut.
