Lou Holtz always said it was incredibly difficult to get a football team to play at an emotional peak 2 games in a row. That has stuck with me for 31 years.

1993
11/13/1993 #2 Notre Dame 31 #1 FSU 24 (Game of the Century)

11/20/1993 #1 Notre Dame 39 #17 BC 41

ND came out flat as a pancake, and stayed flat until 38-17 in the 4th quarter.

You count it if you beat them when they are ranked. So ND could end the season with 4, top 25 wins. More that most will have in the top 10.

Kinds glad the AP dropped us. Takes some pressure off and keeps ND knowing it’s them against the pollsters.
I have philosophical ambivalence about that. Firstly, all such considerations and musings only draw attention to the futility and folly of having polls at all. They are antithetical to sport and competition. However, if you're stuck with them, I'm not sure how you should think about that. I think I disagree with you. What matters is where they're ranked at the end of the season. Especially if a team ends up like 7-5 or something. What does it matter if they were like, 4-0 when you played them? Even worse is how ranked teams load up on cupcake noncon opponents to start the year, so of course they will coast on their preseason ranking before getting exposed and finding their proper level. But the one mitigating factor is the fact that you defeated a team caused them to drop in the polls. And I don't know what to make of that. But it's not really that significant. If it wasn't ND that beat them somebody else probably would have....

Rankings change every week. Am has a bye and will win their next 2 games and be right around 10 before they play Texas. Very quality team and win. One of the best wins of the season

Army will be ranked in the top 20. So whether I think they are quality or not is pointless. It will be a top 25 win regardless of your feelings about them or mine

We should have 3 top 25 wins by the end of the year
Army, like Navy, has no business being ranked in the top 25.

Navy getting shellacked by lousy, crappy Rice is not that surprising.

Army has done nothing to be ranked in the top 25.

It doesn't take 8 years. My nieces husband played 9 years ending in 2016. He was fully vested after his third season. A sad but interesting fact was their 401k match from the league was dollar for dollar yet many players were not participating during his time. Who gives up free money ?
Most if not all have an agent and financial advisor. Lots of horror stories out there about terrible financial decisions by professional athletes. But you would think AT A MINIMUM, these advisors would ensure maximum 401 contributions, a mere pittance of these athlete’s salaries.

NDNJ isn’t to blame IMO. The truth is always somewhere in the middle. I realize you advocate for Golson at every turn in this Forum; however, the truth is again, somewhere in the middle.
The truth likely is somewhere in the middle as you suggest, but IrishMike has been pretty consistent of late simply asking for civility and posts limited to discussing ND football. I personally appreciate his Don Quixote efforts, but accept that name calling deriding posts are part of our free forum. Each of us has the choice to read or not read these posts, or to put the poster on ignore, and I’m fine with that.

How good is the NFL pension? Does it really set you for life, and you gotta play for eight years? That sounds lame, given how so many NFL players' careers are only like three or four years or whatnot. And they get shit, huh? They should redo the CBA so those guys get something too. Maybe they already do. They're kind of like the lifeblood of the league. You can't have a roster without those types of players, they're a good chunk of every roster, and they play key, if more secondary roles. Team sport, right? I guess they don't have the clout when it comes to the negotiations, and their own union leaves them high and dry, and caters to the stars, and they came up with the 8 year threshold, and after that point its deemed that you've earned your keep. And they're lucky to make a team at all is how they're supposed to look at it.
