This is my opinion based on current information that I possess.
Ara argued against ND's joining the BIG becuse of his experiences at Northwestern. The BIG did little to help Northwester find a level playing field and much to prevent it. ND is more like Northwestern than any other school in the BIG, including USC. And the BIG has no history of animosity toward Northwestern.
Why does the BIG want ND? The money and the control.
The only thing the ACC wants from ND is full membership. They have already treated ND fairly and basketball and the Olympic sports have already thrived in the ACC. Unlike the BIG, ND can trust the ACC enough.
The only caveat is that as part of joining the ACC, ND must insist that ESPN renegotiate its TV deal with the ACC and. Bring it in line with the deals negotiated by the BIG and the SEC. That would fair and good for college football.
Or, of course, ND should remain independent. Negotiations for ND's new TV deal will be telling.
