Next year ,we face a talented USC, Michigan State,Georgia .Plus who knows what Duke, Virginia Tech ,Miami, Syracuse ,will be ? Then there is the always tough Navy and Stanford . Army ,Nevada and Miami of Ohio look to be very winnable games . North Carolina State and Texas ?

Is our defense going to be any better next year ? Day and Smith , Okwara are huge losses . Even with Jones ,Cage Hayes?, Tillery at the tackle position ,none seem to be pass rishers .Rochell ?. Any pass rushers at defensive ends ? Trumbetti? Defensive backs again will be a problem . Russel and Redfield plus new players like Crawford, etc , should be an improvement .

Offense should be a strength even with the loss of Stanley and Martin on the line . Hunter , Fuller ,Robinson ,Jones etc will be very good at wide outs .

In Kelly's 6 years at ND ,we had two outstanding seasons ; 2012 and 2015 , but the other 4 years were mediocre 8-4 seasons . Alabama ,Ohio State ,Clemson ,USC Florida State ,etc are reloading .We are rebuilding .

I don't think there's any doubt we'll be middling team next year. I see a lot of games like last night's, where teams can't stop our offense (at least until we get to the red zone) and our defense can't stop anyone. Next year, when I set the DVR I'll be sure to allow an extra 30 minutes because there will be lots of scoring and lots of commercials.

When did we add Georgia to the schedule? All the programs you listed have been getting huge recruiting classes, that makes a difference when talking about reloading and rebuilding. Bama has had the number 1 or 2 recruiting class the past 7 seasons I think and people wonder why they won 3 titles, got into the first playoff, and will be back again this year. Saban is definitely one the better coaches but he has tremendous talent, same goes for Meyer at Ohio, but at ND people expect Kelly to do the same with less which makes no sense.

The defensive front will be better guaranteed. No one will be able stop this offense. I think someone among the freshman class will provide some help on the pass rush situation. The Crawford kid should be an instant impact player next year. Russell might need to play some safety next year to put him better position to help the defense cause more turnovers on defense. ND's offense will be impossible to game plan for next year especially if the tight ends and Kizer gets more experience. Most of those teams you mentioned will be looking for head coaches next year. Georgia, USC, Stanford, and Michigan St. will be bringing in new QB's next year. Notre Dame should be in the playoffs next year.

We don't play Georgia next year. They are a couple years away. Open up with UT at their place.
Strengths next year- OL, QB, RB, WR/TE, DT
Solid but needing one pash rusher at DE
Question Marks with solid potential - Secondary, LB's

I was never a big Kelly fan, nor and I big Kelly critic. I think he is a good coach with a good season like this year's
With 2 loses to a bad season with 5 or so loses. So I think ND will remain a good to somewhat average team for years to come.
Kelly is just not in the class of a Saban, Urban, etc. , and ND's future will reflect that.
Kelly is certainly an improvement over the last coaches that we had since Lou left, but He is not the coach that will
Bring back the glory !

First of all it is "close, but no cigar" Second BK has done a great job at ND - We have had a great season - w/ 2loses by 2 pts each to great teams - where we could easily won and we'd be 12-0. BK is a great coach for ND. I see ND being right in the thick of things again next season. As a ND fan that is what I want and hope for each season.

Agree and especially true vs. a great offense. Was at the game and felt like we were getting homered whenever the Pac 12 Refs could homer us.
Russell to safety, Georgia?

Saban, Urban would never come to ND -- too many restrictions, not enough $$$ (what is Saban's salary?) Our kids go to class. The guy who constantly impresses me is Dantonio.

Kelly is our man and he is doing a great job. (I'm curious what he does this offseason: re: defensive problems.)

But we have young Kickers, RB's, QB's and lineman who will be around a long time.

Things are looking up.

Alright ,we play Georgia down the line .But the point being made ,is our defense going to improve with Day ,Smith ,Okwara going to the pros?

Maybe we should stay home. If playing 3 good teams in a year is too tough for us we shouldn't even think about playing in playoffs ever.

Georgia will have a 1st year head coach (they were terrible this year even with 9-3 record)
USC will have a 1st year coach
Michigan State is not any better than us.

So should win all 3 games or maybe go 2-1 at worst.

the LB crew will be questionable will be questionable next year. BVG stayed with Schmidt far too long; and most definately 30 seconds too long

Yeah, like it was Schmidt's fault. You are a tool who doesn't know shit. Keep crying your mantra on JS. What a douchebag

To Rivals50 expert .

I like your optimism and hope you are right . But the defense needs some shoring up.. Almost everyone on this board agrees. .

LA Times supporting interim Helton for USC head coaching job . If BK opted for the pros and Chip Kelly is given the boot by the Eagles, just wonder if Swarbrick would have Chip K on his A list.?

Chip is too slimy for ND. He was in trouble with NCAA before he bolted for the Pros.
Don't think BK is interested in moving on at this point. He has just now got the program where it can contend year after year.
Can't believe that USC is going to hire Helton. We can only hope.

Perse, wow - you truly are getting old with this crap. JS was on his assignment and you're ridiculous for inferring it was his fault that we didn't hold.

Stu, agreed....m hopeful that BK takes a similar approach on the Defense as he has done with special teams (another area we saw great improvements on - I don't offhand even recall more than 1 or 2 decent returns against us this season) and the Offense in the last couple of off-seasons.

If we see Smith return, I actually think our LB's will be fine. The Secondary remains, as seemingly is always the case, the biggest question.

We also desperately need a receiving TE option. The hole was clearly evident this year, especially in the Red Zone.

Does grace have eligibility left ,? Can he apply for a 6th year ?

First, we don't play Georgia until 2017. Secondly, do you think all those teams are not losing key seniors too? Kelly has built a program that can handle several injuries to starters over the season and still be successful, his program will handle graduations too. That's why we have him, and why he's so highly regarded around the country.

pure folly - we are one of the big boys again We ended up 2 plays away from 12-0 sans ten starters -- stupid comment -- just stupid

Kelly, I love your enthusiasm, and I am not at all trying to be negative, but we are also 2 plays away from 8 - 4. Temple and Virginia. ( not even counting the onside kicks against GT and Boston College).

2014 lost half our defense to injury after playing Fl St to a refs call away from a win would have won 10+
2013 lost our QB for the season would have won 10+

2010 2011 -- was changing the culture of our program .

I think ND will get a few elitish defenders in the current class. If so, then the ascent will continue.

The bigger threat to all the is the future of Tom Caughlin!

There is no reason at all, none, that ND can't win 10 games next year. MSU is not going to be as good. Stanford will have a new QB. Texas, who knows. USC will have a new coach. No reason at all we shouldn't win at least 1 of those games. The rest of the schedule is not very good.

On offense we will have a lot back. On defense we have to replace Russell, Day, Okwara and maybe Jaylon.

Notre Dame is all but officially out of the College Football Playoff picture.

ESPN analysts Brett McMurphy and Mark Schlabach predict ND will play Iowa or Houston in the Fiesta Bowl.
If Iowa lost to MSU. Look like ND will play Iowa in the Fiesta Bowl.

Take a look at next years schedule. If the Irish protect home turf and can open with a win at Texas there is a really good chance they are 11-0 heading to So Cal! The offense will be one of the best in the country and if the D can plug a couple holes look out!
