there is a story on the front page about the top irish bowl game and it got me thinking about my all time bowl games. my favorites are the 73 sugar bowl vs bama and the ass kicking we gave undefeated texas in the 77 or 78 cotton bowl. the bama game was so big and important to the players and staff that when our irish took a kickoff back for a score in the second qtr the whole team ran into the endzone and jumped all over the player that scored. so what is everybody else's favorite irish bowl games

I'm a young ND fan who didn't get to see much of ND's glory days(Holtz and before). That said, the best bowl win is probably last year against LSU. The program was in state of disarry. No one was expecting the Irish to do anything, but yet they regrouped, came up with a unique game plan and pulled off the victory!

The 1992 Sugar Bowl...
#3 Florida vs. #18 ND
Ya know there is a similarity between that squad and Brian Kelly teams the last few years.....BUT....BUT..

For multiple reasons that year we dropped a few games, injuries, etc.... everyone said we had no business being in that game. Florida was going to destroy us.

What happened? We tightened the chin strap that game and the entire world just got introduced to one Jerome Bettis.
Florida had no answer for our running game. Solid Notre Dame victory. I don't know if anybody would have beat us that day.

I have to say it was the first bowl game I watched - '73 Sugar Bowl. I was spending the night at my oldest brother's house - who I admire immensely - and the game ended shortly before midnight on December 31st. I was so excited that I stayed awake for my first ringing in of the new year. To this day, New Year's Day is my favorite holiday.

hey shakin go to youtube then and check out the 73 sugar bowl against undeated bama since you say that you haven't seen the early days of irish football because of you being a younger guy. the Colorado orange bowl in 90 after I graduated from high school where we beat them while they were undefeated was a great win also for our irish also

Cool... My thoughts when I saw the title immediately went to the two bowl games you mention in your post. A few years ago I bought a CD collection of ND's greatest games, and these were among those, and I have enjoyed watching these annually since. Hope we can add this year's game to these memories.

Wow really tough question. I guess the 1973 sugar bowl. I was only 10 but I still remember it vividly. My entire family watch that game. The 1978 Cotton bowl is 1a on my list. Texas had Earl Cambell. They were number 1 and ND was the underdog. Most experts didn't even give ND a chance. Not only did the Irish win, but they won big. No team the entire year had stopped Texas or Earl Campbell. Back then Notre Dame was always very good to even great defensively. Go figure, great defense and two National championships. Defense still is the key to winning championships.

No votes for 88 Fiesta Bowl? And let's not forget the 71 Cotton upset of Texas. Having said that I think my favorite was the 78 Cotton

I had to only pick one....
But 1989 fiesta vs. WVU

1994 cotton bowl vs. Texas A&M.....Nebraska or FSU wouldn't have beat the Aggies that year. The Aggie defense was stifling.

My favorite one was the 1925 Rose Bowl. My great grandfather took may dad and me to see it. We had a great time gang! I shouldn't tell tall ones here.;););) Really my favorite one was the 1970 Cotton Bowl against Texas. It was Notre Dame's fist bowl game in 45 years. I didn't like the ending but it provided fuel for a great run in 1970. Revenge was sweet in the 1971 Cotton Bowl.:):):)
You got to see me score in that rose bowl game. I had a nice run didn't I?

LOL

89 Fiesta Bowl Beating WVU and winning the National Championship.
2nd fav is the 92 Sugar Bowl. Beating Spurrier was epic.

1992 Sugar Bowl against Florida. I was there. Took grief from awful Gator fans in the days leading up to the game, so it was nice to shut them up and have Bourbon Street all to ourselves after the game.

1973 Sugar Bowl against Alabama when Hunter had the kickoff return and Tom Clements threw the long pass from the endzone to tight end Chris Weber for a huge first down late in the game to clinch the victory. Turns out ND's punter pointed out to Ara before the game that the field sloped downward to either end, and kicking a punt would be like trying to kick uphill. If we had to punt Alabama would have had a short drive for a game-winning field goal.

1970 Cotton Bowl against Texas. Younger guys don't know what a huge deal it was for ND, which had been stung by criticism in the '20s that it was a football factory, to play in a bowl game. Good old Fr. Hesburgh insisted the bowl proceeds be used to provide scholarship money for minority students. We got beat when wishbone-running Texas miraculously completed a wounded duck pass late in the fourth quarter to set up the winning TD. It was a heartbreaking loss, but if you are a Notre Dame fan you know that heartbreaking losses are woven in among the thrilling victories.

Ain't that the truth!

This conversation is proof that ND needs this Fiesta Bowl win against OSU in the worst way. My generation still has yet to see a major bowl win. This is part of the reason why I was so happy when ND was not only selected for the Fiesta Bowl, but against OSU. It would be a step in the right direction of regaining prestige and recognition among CFB's elite. So lets take care of business!

GO FIGHTIN IRISH!!!!

Tight end's name was Robin Weber, from my high school, Dallas Jesuit. Since I lived in Dallas at the time I attended both the 1978 and 1979 Cotton Bowl victories. Both were great, but to come back down 22 points with less than 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter against Houston was pretty sweet, especially since UH was already celebrating midway through the 3rd quarter.

Ha, that's right. I confused him with Chris Webber, the Michigan basketball player who was one of the Fab Five. Chris Webber would have caught the pass, but he tripped over his baggy shorts. Seriously, I believe that was Robin Weber's only catch all season.

#1 is 1973 Sugar Bowl

Just coincidence that both are Sugar bowls.

No question, my favorite is the 1973 game against Alabama. Important and significant victory as well as being one of the first bowl games once ND started going to bowls again. I loved the critical pass to Robin Weber late in the game; so damn exciting at the time.

thanks for finding this game johnnie82. I swear I've looked on youtube before and never saw it but maybe somebody jus recently uploaded it or maybe I just missed it

No problem. while searching for it I had to try different tactics. finally had to throw "1991-1992" in the search

Another one of my favorite Bowl games was the 1976 Gator Bowl against Penn State. ND spanked them 20-9 and the game wasn't that close. It was the game where we told them, "We are ND and you're just a bunch of whiners." Back then Joe Pa kept complaining about favoritism of the media toward Notre Dame. I loved every minute of that game.
I attended that game with my parents, it was my freshman year. I learned that Jax is only theoretically in Florida, it's actually in south Georgia. It was freakin' freezing at the game. We had to go out and buy warmer clothes after we got to Jacksonville.

I thought the one where they played Ohio State and kept cutting to Brady Quinn's sister in a 1/2 AJ Hawk jersey was hilarious.

My Favorite is Joe Montana. Notre Dame vs Houston. Joe Montana come back to won this game. But I not born yet.:(

My all-time favorite ND Bowl game was '92 when the Irish beat the Gators. ..... until ......

the 2012 Champs Bowl....... ... ;)

The Fiesta Bowl in 1989 for the national title is first for me. The Cotton Bowl in '93 versus A&M in 30 degree weather, with snow throughout the stadium was a great experience, too. Great D, and strong running game...

That was called the cheerios bowl because people thought ND had so many holes or weaknesses they would get creamed(of wheat). Can you do better perse?

The win against West Virginia ,who even though we didn't put up a lot of points :it was for the National championship and we haven't won any since .
