College football is too fickle for me to guess what the score and statistics might be at the end of the game tomorrow; however, there are some things I would like to see from the game:
1. Better timing between the running backs and offensive line. I feel that since the days of Ty, either the running backs hit the hole before the line has a chance to create lanes or the line makes the lanes but the running back is not near the point of attack yet. Crisp blocking and timing of the RBs burst would be phenomenal.
2. Tighter coverage. Whether it is zone, man, or combo coverages, I hope to see the ND DBs and LBs closer and in better position on the route runners. Fewer plays where the receiver has a 5 yd cushion between he and the defenders. Although I do get that each coverage option essentially has an intentional soft spot depending on the scheme.
3. More tackles for loss or within 1-2 yds of the LOS. This would show the confidence and comfortability of the D-Line, LBs, and drop down safeties in the scheme for the run game and short passing game allowing them to play more downhill.
4. Logistics. Calling timeouts intentionally rather than to correct errors in alignment, few to no offsides or illegal procedure penalties, and quick/efficient rotations of players and alignment pre-snap.
I do not review games aside from watching it live like other well-versed posters here. These 4 listed above have stood out to me for quite some time. Some years they are better than others. I hope this year is better. Go Irish.
