Former Notre Dame All-American Jackie Young scored 19 points off the bench on Sunday to lead Team USA to an 87-68 victory over Germany in their final game of group play in the women's Olympic basketball competition. The Americans (3-0), with a 58-game win streak and chasing an eighth straight gold medal, next play a quarterfinal matchup against upstart Nigeria (2-1) Wednesday at noon ET.
Young was 5-for-8 from the 3-point arc and had four steals.
Former ND star Jewell Loyd is also on the Team USA roster. Former ND center Lauren Ebo is a reserve for Nigeria, the first African team ever to reach the Olympic quarterfinals in women's or men's basketball. In other quarterfinals Wednesday, Serbia (2-1) takes on Australia (2-1) at 5 a.m., ET; Spain (3-0) takes on Belgium (1-2) at 8:30 a.m.; and Germany (2-1) meets France (2-1) at noon.
The USA-Nigeria winner players the Serbia-Australia survivor in the semis on Friday. The Bronze and Gold medal games are set for next Sunday at 5:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. ET, respectively. The group games were all played in Lille, France, with the competition now moving to and finishing up in Paris.
Team Canada, featuring former Irish forward Natalie Achonwa and current Irish guard Cass Prosper, is headed home after failing to make the quarterfinals. Achonwa had 5 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal in 17 minutes for Canada on Sunday in its 79-70 group loss to Nigeria. Prosper logged 10 minutes, scoring 4 points with 2 rebounds and 2 assists.
