No. 19 Notre Dame closed out its 77-63 conference win at Pittsburgh with defense.
The Irish (14-4, 5-2 ACC) allowed the Panthers (10-9, 1-7) to shoot just 3-of-18 from the field in the fourth quarter Sunday. Pittsburgh managed only eight points in the final quarter with no points coming in the last 3:25.
Notre Dame didn't make it easy on itself with nine turnovers in a first half that ended in a 39-39 tie and eight more turnovers in the second half. But Notre Dame's points in the paint and sharp free-throw shooting were enough to allow the Irish to pick up the road victory in Petersen Events Center.
Notre Dame scored 10 more points in the paint than Pittsburgh (38-28) and made 15 more free throws (19-4). The Irish finished 19-of-20 from the charity stripe.
Graduate forward Maya Dodson provided a major presence for Notre Dame inside. She scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.
Four other Irish scored double-digit points: freshman guards Olivia Miles (14) and Sonia Citron (12), junior forward Sam Brunelle (10) and senior guard Dara Mabrey (10).
Pittsburgh's Destiny Strother scored 14 points off the bench on 4-of-4 shooting from 3 in the first half. She didn't make another shot in the second half. Guard Jayla Everett finished with a team-high 15 points on 6-of-23 shooting and 2-of-12 from 3.
Notre Dame will return home for its next four games: Syracuse (Thursday), Boston College (Sunday), No. 4 NC State (Feb. 1) and Virginia Tech (Feb. 3).
