"There have been question marks regarding Notre Dame's defense in the past, but safety Drue Tranquill is expecting much better production from the squad this season.

When asked if defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder has tried to simplify things for his defense, Tranquill was quick to say that it is actually the opposite.

"He definitely hasn't changed a thing," said Tranquill. "If anything, he has added some things. Just with our knowledge of the game, it continues to grow. Being in his system for two years now, he just keeps putting more on our plate and he challenges us. I've grown a lot as a football player under him and I really appreciate that from him.""

The ND coaching staff is excellent, led by a great coach and all are high character guys who get the most out of kids on and off the field.

Is my sarcasm meter broken? I hope so. It's tough to say the defense has played up to its talent level the past 2 years.

kelly may be setting and ND mugshot record. Plus, we have had multiple cheating scandals. One may vacate all the'12 wins and possibly another season. We're right in the NCAA cross hairs for an unprecedented ND punishment.

All is well....

This has been a public service announcement from your friends at the IHFSUJW Foundation..

(I hate FSU and Jameis Winston)

FWIW, I asked the reporters & mods on the pay site about any on-going NCAA issues relative to the Frozen Five episode. They said that there's been no movement for several months and they don't expect that there's ever going to be anything that comes of it.

The NCAA doesn't move very swiftly. That's a fact.
We are in their cross hairs regardless of what your sources say....

Prove it!

The school has told the NCAA about possible academic fraud and the third-winningest football program may also have to hand back some of its wins.

"Notre Dame will voluntarily vacate any victories in which they participated," said Rev. John I. Jenkins, Notre Dame's president.

Where it gets real dicey is the "paid employee" helping angle....

“I want to underscore that the current investigation has not revealed any misconduct or knowledge of impropriety by regular, full-time staff,” he said. “However, given the student’s brief status as a paid employee, there was the possibility of what the NCAA considers an ‘excess benefit’ given to the student athlete by a representative of the institution.”

That stuff is approaching two years old. Is there anything recent that would give you the impression that the NCAA "has us in their cross hairs"? Since you seem to be somewhat alone in that thought.

Yeah, this is a real think tank. The good news is we self reported and conducted a full investigation. The bad news is a paid employee was complicit.
'12 and '13 wins are at risk.....

Of course the kid who is an engineering major and one of the smartest players on the team likes the over-the-top complexity of the defensive scheme.. I'm not worried about Drue. I'm worried about the incredibly talented young linebackers and safeties (Bilal, Coney Studstill, Elliot etc, etc) and their ability to grasp the system and help ND.

The more-and-more I watch BVG's 4-3, the more I almost wish ND would switch back to the 3-4, given that ND doesn't seem to want to create a pass rush with their front four, made evident through the number of times they drop a DL into coverage on a zone blitz look and the fact that they have a 3-Tech playing SDE in Rochell and another 3-Tech co-starting at the WDE spot in Hayes. Built to stop the run for sure, and I understand the use of sub packages, but it still doesn't make a lot of sense sometimes.

Really hoping to see a lot of this in passing situations this year, but not getting my hopes up...

WDE: Daelin Hayes
DT: Isaac Rochell
NG: Jay Hayes
SDE: Andrew Trumbetti
LB: Nyles Morgan
LB: James Onwualu
NB: Shaun Crawford
CB: Cole Luke
FS: Max Redfield
SS: Drue Tranquil
CB: Nick Watkins

Sad little cgvr, sitting back hoping and praying he can see "his" team put on probation whether there is anything to the allegations or not. What a sad little man!

While I'm no fan of BVG.

I'll worry about ND and sanctions right after the NCAA does something to NC for their outrageous and unprecedented cheating that went on for years.

So all your CONSTANT bitching about this subject is based on something you can't provide any further proof of except an article 2 years old. With the only excuse being the NCAA is slow. You are a JOKE of the highest order man. You just can't make this stuff up. Your are singularly tarnishing an ND degree daily with your nonsense.

Men's basketball is not even mentioned in the newly amended notice of allegations from the NCAA. They will receive very little if any punishment.

Girls BBall on the other hand is going to get HAMMERED......such a joke.

You have UNC issue out there, now the Tunsil issue out there, the Bama assistant coach fired for violations this week. Not to mention Miami, and a 1/2 dozen other schools.

I see no further problems for ND due to anything already known about. Including the 'frozen 5' or Shembo or anyone else.

Your tantrum is entertaining. Thank you.

The Notre Dame academic scandals made national news in multiple media forms. Sadly, the one involving multiple players had the involvement of a paid ND employee. The positives working for us are co-operation and that the employee was not full time. There are plenty of eyes on the situation. The issue is not closed until the NCAA says it is.... Based on the NCAA's handling of dunbar as a "booster"..... draw your own conclusion.

You are welcome.....your daily melts and rants are just as entertaining belive me. They affirm daily that yes, there are really people like you in this world....I just make it policy to spend ZERO time with them. Carry on with your daily barrage of anger and faux outrage over a football program that is supposed to provide joy and entertainment.

Melts? I post with confidence in the irrefutable statistics and information I provide. Your "tantrum" is emblematic and representative of a segment of ND's "disoriented"/delusional fan base that won't accept reality. Your take on the NCAA investigating ND being over with is just another misguided example of wishful thinking. The "rose colored glass" view of this program is a systemic problem.
"your daily barrage of anger and faux outrage" Classic! Thanks for the chuckles. If you'd like to establish credibility try to refute a word I've written. There are plenty of posts to choose from....

I am enjoying your fallacious umbrage.

Sometimes, I wish we would just tell the NCAA where to stick it and form a new athletic organization with other like-minded institutions. I don't think it is that far-fetched.

They always threaten it. They will never do it.

But yeah. The NCAA is a joke. The USC restrictions were a joke of over reach. Especially when you consider what happened to schools like Miami.

Look at the tunsil thing at Ole Miss that came out yesterday. Same kind of issue as the Bama (Fluker) player a couple years ago. Chances are Ole Miss will take in the pants over this. While Bama got exactly nothing for theirs.

You seem like a real insider ... Working your higher up underground connections, rubbing elbows, rattling cages ... And then sharing them tangentially in threads on the free board - you are a change agent, thank you!

"From what’s already been publicly stated, Notre Dame’s situation doesn’t include misconduct from any employees involved in academic support.

This should be a very important part of any NCAA ruling and could be what keeps this from being an issue that demands vacating victories. While the North Carolina and Florida State situations involved members of the faculty or academic support systems at the university, Notre Dame’s does not.

From what we’ve heard from university president Rev. John Jenkins and Jack Swarbrick, the investigation’s findings don’t implicate anybody in that realm, but rather focus on the behavior of one paid student employee of the athletic department. Multiple sources have told me that this person served as a student athletic trainer for the football team."

Exactly. This is the key issue. Cheating, like Golson's, doesn't require NCAA sanctions and is handled internally. Cheating involving a paid employee of the University is another issue altogether. It sucks, but when the NCAA can call dunbar a booster.....

"but rather focus on the behavior of one paid student employee of the athletic department. Multiple sources have told me that this person served as a student athletic trainer for the football team.

Here’s what Jenkins told faculty in mid-September, according to an Observer Report:

[Jenkins] said the athletic department’s compliance office became aware of “a potentially problematic situation involving a current student athlete as well as a student who served for a brief time as a paid student employee of the athletic department, although that position had no role in academic tutoring or advising of student athletes.”

I'm having a difficult time placing blame on VanGorder's defense because of the large amount of season ending injuries over the past two seasons. I'm hoping for a more normal injury season this year. It's year three so players should know the defense by now. We will see against Texas. Diaco's defense wasn't that impressive in his last year either. Alabama really exposed it's defensive weaknesses in that NC game.
No offense, but posts like these get blown up by facts. I know they are common perceptions but this isn't reality.

In Diaco's last year NDs defense was 7th in the nation in total D.

And the injury excuse for BVG is overplayed. In 2014 ND had some significant D injuries, but still should have been better. 2015, though, ND didn't have any rash of injuries of defense until bowl week. They lost Jarron preseason but were quite healthy relatively soeaking.

All teams lose players to injury. Only those living in the ND bubble believe that ND had bad injury breaks in 2015. Hell Clemson had major injuries to their 2 best defensive players in the title game and didn't make excuses. The injury comments are just that- excuses for BVG. 2015 he did not have any legitimate injury excuse for his poor defensive product, especially considering he had elite talent at several positions (including top 5 talent Jaylon).

When asked if defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder has tried to simplify things for his defense, Tranquill was quick to say that it is actually the opposite.

"He definitely hasn't changed a thing," said Tranquill. "If anything, he has added some things.
This further diminishes what little confidence I had that ND would be markedly improved on D in 2016.
