When you guys do all your wondering about players who won't get 5th years because of the number crunches you are all wasting your time. As I say every year. Notre Dame always plays with under 85--there are always transfers, medical hardships, recruits getting cold feet, , academic casualties, arrests, and so on.
Players like Amir Carlisle who are contributors and RKGs always get 5th years at Notre Dame. ALWAYS!!

*** I know it is fun to do on a message board. But it isn't reality.

Congrats I guess, I still believe Golson, Heagerty and Ishaq would have been prioritized above AC as well as Bo. I mean if we follow your logic I suppose discussion about how many wins the team will have, who is going to be the 5th starting O-lineman, who is going to start at Mike and what next year's recruiting class will look like are all wastes of time too.

... What kind of Logic is that ? Slick Willie? How can you prioritize players that DO NOT want to play at Notre Dame with a proven player who WANTS to play at Notre Dame?

The premise is based on the assumption that they wanted to play at ND, hence use of the term "would have". If ND had taken 25-26 like they had hoped the numbers crunch would have been as sever if not more.

Hegarty was not good at ND. He was blown off the ball numerous times throughout the year. Pop in the UNC game tape.

They wanted Hegarty for depth on the O-Line. He was a first year starter, growing pains were going to be expected, the entire O-Line struggled in the UNC game. I am the first to admit I thought Carlisle was on the border of being in at the time based on the information we knew and some assumptions that were clearly identified. The information changed, Carlisle had a great spring and he is not on the border anymore, congrats Bodi on not being wrong.

I believe things like this change what should be expected though.

For instance in Golson you had a gun slinger. Sure he could scramble. But he was a throw first QB. By a long shot. So you need that many more elite pass catchers.

With Malik you have a guy just as comfortable scrambling for yards as throwing for them. So having extra TE' and linemen are needed. On both sides. The run game tends to stall more in the early game then the pass game. So you need enough defensive linemen to last 4 quarters.

So it isn't just the number of players. But having the right depth in the right spots and needed. Last year ND didn't. And they paid for it
