After watching Brady last week move the team up the field in the playoff game vs the Chiefs one of the best defenses in all of football I thought back to the Montana Young 49er teams >

One of the commentators said why run the football if you can pick apart a team with short passing up the field .

With ND closing in on Robertson and having really high level WR's - slot guys and TE's w a lot of talented depth at QB I hope Kelly continues to develop a passing attack that he calls on often . In some cases vs teams like clemson , Oh St or alabama I see it as the only way to offset their high level front sevens . Three yds and a cloud of dust sounds good on internet message boards but in reality there are certain teams you simply can't run the ball on on a consistent basis no matter how good your rushing attack is .

What Brady - Montana - Young accomplished - accomplish with their short passing game is fun to watch and can be imo the most difficult type of offense to stop . At the skill positions we will have speed - size - and lots of depth to put pressure on opposing defenses in a myriad of ways . I know Kelly knows that and I trust that we will see a continually aggresive approach to moving the football up the field .

I also think that Kelly will incorporate Smythe - Boykin - Jones- St Brown and Robinson ( see size ) more in the red zone to improve on the red zone numbers next season .

Montana was a master at running the West Coast offense, where short passes were viewed as an extension of the running game. Montana excelled, as does Brady, at making quick reads and getting the ball out quickly and accurately. Right now, this is hardly the strength of Kizer's game, as he excels at the long ball and he fails to trust the shorter routes until he sees a lot of separation. Not sure about Malik, as he has shown a great touch with the short game, but also wildly inconsistent as per the Virginia game. What seems apparent is that in order for ND to compete and win at the highest level, we need a passing attack that keeps the defense from loading the box, a running game between the tackles, and we need our QB to extend plays and represent a running threat as well. All three of our QB's offer this potential.

Tex - No team can count on consistently taking the top off the defense as ND did this past season w Fuller - in most cases vs a defensive staff with a clue you would always roll over a safety to take what a Fuller does away . Then you are left with shorter routes and running the football . IMO ND has the weapons to consistently pressure teams with the passing game . I think it is incumbent on Kelly and Sanford to identify who the best QB is to implement that attack ( west coast- spread- short routes ) offense .

In fact I would like to see us take the approach vs certain teams of allowing the passing game to open up the run game and take full advantage of Adams getting creases due to loosening up the box . I am in love with the short passing attack as I believe if it is done well it is as close to unstoppable as any offense in football and opens up everything else in your playbook .

Something else you didn't mention that in present day rules it is about promoting offense. Games are officiated as such. A quick underneath passing attack has become nearly impossible to defend. Throw in how college loves to no huddle hurry up teams ate getting points no matter who they are playing.

Defensively its very frustrating to try and stop as well.

There is no substitute for a great running game.

OJ Simpson - Gale Sayers and Jim Brown never won a championship

Roger Craig was a middle of the pack NFL running back --

A high level short passing offense trumps the running game and in fact makes the run harder to stop

"Jim Brown never won a championship." Huh?

The first Super Bowl was 1967.

Jim Brown retired in 1965.

He won an NFL championship in 1964.

He also retired at the age of 29.

Gayle Sayers played from 65-71. He suffered serious knee injuries in '68 and '70....

Simpson was stuck in buffalo.....

Your posts are always entertaining.

PS Craig had 2 seasons with over 2000 yards rushing+ receiving. He's on the HOF bubble...
He was the first player in NFL history to rush for at least 1,000 yards while also having 1,000 yards receiving in the same season.

The reason Brian Kelly has been successful at Nd is because of the running game stepping up.
A great Oline allowed Cj Prosise and Josh Adams to run wild in 2016. Did you not see Cj's 91 yard TD run against G. Tech or Josh Adams 99 yard td run against Wake or his 70 yard TD run or Deshone Kizers long TD run against Temple ? If we ran more in the red zone we probably would have won more games. Look at Alabama and Ohio State--they have a great running game.
And in 2010,2011, 2012, and 2013 we had Jonas Grey and Robert Hughes and Cierre Wood and Theo Riddick and T. Folston making great runs.
It is nice to be able to pass of course but Charlie Weis could not win with passing alone. The two best years he had was when he had Darious Walker running the ball. The next three years ND did not win more than 7 games because of a poor running game.

In college you need to run to win !! Even the high octane big 12 teams run the ball.

Is there a poster here dumber than cgvr?

Absolutely, Argusman aka holy smoke aka Epiticus aka Big fella fan aka Timmy terrific and a host of other names all hiding under the shell of anonymity offered by the internet and at times even talking with himself while everybody on the board knows what is going on!!!

Argus............estranged by family

Where did I say running the ball is not important ? When I say that running the ball is not important get back to me . What I did say was there are certain times no matter how good your running game is you will run up against a team that will stop or at least slow down the run and having a high level passing attack will offset that . You have a problem with that observation ?

Lastly ND has an abundance of talent @ WR and QB if ND became a predictable run first offense and leaned heavily on the run it would effect future recruiting at those positions and make ND much easier to defend .

The two most successful football teams in the last 40 yrs are the SF 49ers and NE Patriots -- short well executed passing attacks is one of major reasons why .

If ND gets to the point where they can out talent teams by simply running the ball down their throats in the red zone I am all in -- heretofore that is not the case so a strategic well executed short pass offense could offset that shortcoming and allow ND to be more effective in the red zone

BTW in 1000 2 pt conversion attempts in the NFL 300 were converted successfully via passing 150 were successful via the run of those runs a significant portion of those was by the QB .

Also in the 1000 attempts for 2 pts the teams chose to pass the pall 730 times vs running 270 - why ?

Passing the ball is easier than running the football vs many teams which is why I want ND to always focus on having a high level passing attack

Great! So all we need is for Brady or Montana to line up at quarterback for the Irish next year.

Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith, Franco Harris, Marcus Allen and many others won Championship. So did Jim Brown and the Browns. What the hell is your point?

This is a very good strawman. People take note on how it's developed. Kelly Heroes coming in on the hot route...

Brady threw 56 times yesterday. Also, comparing kelly to a team run by the legendary Bill Walsh is added comedy. Thanks for the chuckles. It took 6 years for us to get plays called efficiently... "uh this one, no that one, uh, no this one, uh, no fade left or right....uh, I don't know" time out or delay of game....

kelly's an average coach with the weight of the ND colossus behind him. Stanford's staff gets more out of their players than we ever will under the dope.... Luatua has zero carries and zero receptions... That's all you need to know about the dunce....
