Tommy Rees first down play calling has killed Notre Dame. Every team begins 1st down in "Base" defense. It is when they are most vulnerable to a pass. You could hit Mayer for 6-8 yards on first down basically every first down play.

Instead basic slow developing runs last night on 11 first down runs yielded-
Estime 3 yards
Estime loss of 2
Estime 8 yards
Estime 2 yards
Tyree 5 yards
Diggs 4 yards
Diggs 7 yards
Estime loss of 1
Estime 1 yard
Tyree 13 yards
Buchner 7 yards

Throwing on first down 8 times-
Styles 54 yards
Mayer no gain
Baumann 22 yards
Styles incomplete (absolutely wide open, just overthrown deep)
Sack
Lenzy 32 yards
Salerno Off PI (should have been a no call)
Lenzy Incomplete

108 yards on 8 first down throws. Attacked the weakest part of the Ohio State D (their secondary). Also obvious was playing Knowles as D coordinator he comes up with a lot of pressure. Throw a screen to Tyree every once in a while and kill them with that overload pressure.

Defense was EXCELLENT. Effort was EXCELLENT. Rees playcalling was ridiculous and typical. Also laughable is that you threw all over OK St in the bowl game. Same defense you decide to run up the middle 32 times? Good grief.
