I saw a title to a video on Notre Dame's youtube channel and it triggered me. It's a privilege to play at ND. Yea it's a real privilege to make notre dame hundreds of millions of dollars while risking permanent injury for a scholarship that isn't even technically guaranteed.

no Notre Dame, it's a privilege that some of the best athletes in the country are considering your school. YOU are the one reaping most of the benefits from this arrangement.

Just tired of this entitled antiquated culture/attitude at Notre Dame. STOP LECTURING YOUR EXTREMELY LUCRATIVE/PROFITABLE ATHLETES THAT YOU EXPLOIT AND START TREATING THEM LIKE THE CROWN JEWELS THAT THEY ARE.

Actually, it's an incredible privilege to play any sport at ND. They will prove to be the best years of a students life.
Yea maybe for some walk on on the lacrosse team, but if you are a top .001% athlete (like the five-star kids ND is struggling to recruit for football) then no. It's a privilege to be considered by that kid who is probably worth millions in guaranteed money but all he gets is a pat on the back and a lecture that it's a privilege to be here lol

No wonder why we struggle so immensely in the modern era of college football getting those types of athletes to sign here.

We need to get with the times at ND .. stop the lectures .. stop the holier than thou 20th century bullshit .. and start pedestalizing these uber football prospects and showing them the respect they deserve. It's the ONLY WAY we'll get them here in the kind of quantity we need to hoist up another national title.

You best believe if the 2022/2023 version of Rockne were still alive he'd be modernizing the F out of the culture here and have a better message that resonates with the best athletes/football players in the country every year.

This suggests that you only see ND football and the relationship with players in a transactional context. In that context, these young men are given entry into a school, most would not otherwise qualify for. They are promised a $320,000 education in exchange for their services. They are supported throughout the academic experience to ensure success and graduation. They are mentored as athletes, as academic students, and as young men to realize their potential. Some develop to move onto “the league”, and the vast majority develop to successful careers outside of football. The alumni network and what it means to career opportunities is damn near priceless. Frankly, if my son had been given the opportunity to play football at Notre Damn, we sure as hell would have considered it a privilege. Your not wrong in your opinion, just don’t place the same transactional value as I do on both the tangible and intangible benefits of playing at Notre Dame.

Nah, it's the exact opposite from my experience. But with the players you are referencing? It's best the coach know that's the attitude they have before attending. They likely won't have a good experience.

And they are currently recruiting the best athletes/football players in the country.

Yea, that is why Keon Keeley and Dante Moore left, and that's why we're holding onto our next 5-star kid in this class by a thread.

A $320,000.00 education. It’s now $80,000.00 per year to attend Notre Dame.

That's why we are ranked 3rd in the country in the 23 class and 2nd in the country in the 24 class

Go Irish
ND has like 5 programs biting at their heels in the 23 class and most of those programs have room to sign the blue-chips who wait until national signing day to commit.

A Peyton Bowen decommit down the stretch will turn this into a pretty similar class that we've come to expect over the last few years (on the border of 10th).

When will Peyton Bowen decommit? I’ve been hearing this for 4 months now.

Notre Dame was #6 on Rivals for 2022.

I've been on this board going on 20 years. I believe this is easily the most short sighted post I've seen here. Remarkably uninformed.

I don't know that Keeley or Dante were ever at ND to leave. So I can't respond to that.

I can tell you a story though....

This one time, at band camp..

I was on campus on I think it was the Friday before game day. Coach Holtz had called a meeting with the families/parents of team members. How did I get there? I don't know, but there I was...

So all the parents are inside this classroom and Holtz is up front where he starts speaking. He says he had heard some of the players had notified their parents that they weren't getting the treatment at the school they thought they should be getting. What they felt entitled to if you will.

I don't remember the exact complaint, but very similar to what Chase is referring to.

Holtz said he had been informed of this complaint, and that all the parents should know that nobody forced their son to come to ND, and if they didn't like the way they were being treated, nobody was forcing them to stay. He said he would never have qualified to attend ND and he was grateful that he was able to send his kids there.

Now that was a long time ago and certainly some of today's players are even more entitled to special treatment. Back then, and I think it's still the case, the players at ND stayed on campus in the regular student dorms. Some players and families really enjoyed that part of the experience. It was a selling point.

I don't doubt that at somewhere like Texas and many other schools, the special players are given nice homes to live with maids and cars and lots of other perks.

That's only anecdotal, I understand that, but Lou had a NC, was loved by many (although clearly not all) of the players, and many of the fans.

Perhaps Chase has had a different experience.

My guess is as good as yours; but where there's this much smoke, there's usually fire.

And to the guy with the long Holtz antidote, that was like 40 years ago man. In 2023 there's a whole different culture in our younger generation. They know their power, they've heard enough lectures from American institutions/the establishment, and are motivated more than ever by things greater than superficial status and making companies (including wealthy universities) even more wealthy.

I know there's no doubt in your mind you know more about putting together a NC team than Lou Holtz.

That's called delusion.

I served in the Navy because I considered it a privilege and an honor to serve the country I love. I felt (and very much still feel) a tremendous sense of gratitude for the blessings of living here in the United States. As JFK challenged all of us: "Ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country." But I guess you are saying that JFK got it all wrong, and instead I should have asked: "Don't ask what you can do for your country, but ask what your country can do for you."? Is that the sense of entitlement today's youth feels? Thankfully, I don't think it is.

While ND undeniably reaps some reward from the student athletes who choose to play sports at Notre Dame, the value of what ND receives pales in comparison to what the typical athlete receives. Here is what an article in Forbes some years back had to say on the subject:

"Despite recent claims that college football players are "oppressed" and "undervalued" relative to the revenues they generate for their universities, I argue using "cost of attendance" and "projected earnings" data that the average "value" of a college football scholarship is in excess of $2 million for student-athletes who (1) play for one of the pre-season Top 25 schools and (2) would not have pursued a college degree if it weren't for their scholarship."

"And for over 99% of Division I FBS college football players on scholarship, this projected value in excess of $2 million is far greater than what any of them INDIVIDUALLY generate in revenue for their school. . . . Regarding long-term earnings enhancement, it is important that readers understand one very simple truth. If you hold a college degree, other things equal, you will earn much more money over the course of your life! This argument is exacerbated when the school in question has some degree of brand identity. . . . [and you] factor in "school quality". Stanford and Notre Dame football players will likely realize even greater value from their diplomas than other Top 25 schools simply because of the quality and branding associated with those schools."

You could not be more wrong.

Particularly for those students-athletes who ar enot likely candidates for moving into professional leagues; getting such an education will be all the more benefit to them.

The attitude of the OP …entitled, ‘give me immediate satisfaction’, me-first mentality, playing the victim ….is exactly why we have regressed to Third World country status…

That’s the “entitlement“ generation’s attitude.
The counter to that is, don’t play football, go and pay for your college education like everyone else.

The fact is that great majority of those who play football at ND will play their last football game at ND and after graduation they’ll need a regular job, a job that will be a function of the education that they received, FREE at ND.

As to the money that ND makes from football, that supports all of the other sports, men’s and women’s at ND.

So, for those who aren’t heading for the NFL where the shelf life is about 5 years if you make the starting lineup, you just received $ 300,000 to $400,000 in an educational equivalent.

The bottom line: if you don’t believe the ND experience is in some way different and has its own inherent value, what are you doing here?
