I posted on another thread that I thought last year's performance at NCST was a fireable offense. In fact, I thought the entire year was a coaching fiasco.
As I've said elsewhere, Kelly deserves credit for his performance this year, but it begs the question, how could someone who has been in this business for so long let it fall apart that badly? Ara had average teams in '71 and '72 and won a NC in '73. But average teams lost two games!
I've been lukewarm on Kelly since he was hired. He was half inept, half great his first season. (Starting QB goes down against Michigan, let your freshmen run slow developing flea-flickers, which are intercepted, and allow them back in the game!) But then, down the stretch, he played it like a fiddle. 2011, he started the year like a lunatic, but 2012 he managed the team well.
People like to say he was pass happy when calling plays. He actually called his share of running plays. The problem is he'd call a pass on first down, usually 20-30 yards down field. If it was incomplete he'd run on second down. His version of the spread, with reliance on chunk plays works nicely with a team like the 2015 team when we had receivers who could stretch the field or take a screen pass to the house. We forget too that in 2015 Prosise, our third string back, was having a great season running the ball until he got banged up. And Adams as a freshman had some great games. So it's not like he relied on the pass all the time.
