Certainly has the potential to be special, but we need a few key players to step up big time. If Tillery shows focus and discipline, he can be a difference maker. Hoping that Trumbetti's move back to the weak side end position allows him to play more intuitively and with more aggression to go along with his great motor. And if Hayes' shoulder problems are behind him and he lives up to the hyperbole, we will have a star in the making. Obviously need guys like Jaye Hayes and Cage etc... to contribute, and Jones and Rochell to play as expected, but think we can be special if Trumbetti and Tillery and Hayes deliver.

Sondes good - always good to have a lot of debts in a injury prone position that needs to platoon during games to be fully effective

Who are "Stephan Bonner" and Khaleed Kareem....?

Sounds good.
Any stats on sizes and speeds?

It takes a bit of guess work to say what players are likely to start the season at in 2016 (growth, conditioning, etc.)

But my best guess on the starters and major contributors would be:

Jarron Jones, rSR (NT) - 6'5", 330lbs
Daniel Cage, rSO (NT) - 6'2", 320lbs
Jerry Tillery, SO (DT) - 6'5", 320lbs
Isaac Rochell, SR (SDE/DT) - 6'3", 285lbs
Andrew Trumbetti, JR (WDE/SDE) - 6'3", 270lbs
Jay Hayes, rSO (WDE/SDE) - 6'3", 285lbs
Dealin Hayes, FR (WDE) - 6'2", 250lbs

I would guess that right now, those will be the only "major" players on the DL...though one of the younger players could always emerge and change that

We're looking pretty solid against he run, especially on the interior. But we're going to need to find more pass rush and playmakers and more overall quality depth on the edges.

Right now I'd expect us to be strong against the run but to struggle against the pass if the team has an above average QB and an OL with even reasonable talent.

Does Jones get an additional year after this year for medical or is he done this year?

Hey Redshirted already, so unless they cold show that both missed seasons were bravura of injury, 2016 would be his last year.

If he's able to play at 100% this season, I doubt it would matter anyway. He'll have his degree in hand and be NFL bound

That's what I thought. Looks like we still have a lot of you gets guys still for the future too.

It would be nice if they could take one of the athletic freshmen & just turn him into a 3rd down pass rusher, NFL style. Just have him pin his ears back & go.

That's exactly what they're doing with 5* Frosh DE/OLB Dealin Hayes by all accounts.

Good, I was always curious why big college programs dont do that more?
In the NFL most teams will try to have one "3rd down rusher" on their roster but it's hard with only 53 man rosters (24 on D).
In college you have huge rosters with all kinds of guys you could make "specialists." Especially with big programs who have 3* & 4* guys doing nothing sonetimes.

This is the most loaded (deep) dline group we have had in the Kelly era.

In 2012 we had an awesome dline with Nix, Tuitt, and Kap Moore, with a young frosh in Sheldon Day. The Hawain dlineman was hurt I think (Kona Swenke).

But we really had not much more than that. That is why Alabama rolled us like a big doobie on a Cheech and Chong movie..

We have a few stars like Decker mentioned but we have so many more big bodies capable of playing some good D1 football.

THIS IS THE YEAR THE IRISH PLAY SOME DAMN DEFENSE TO SUPPORT OUR SUPER OFFENSE!!

Thanks for your detailed post. The only question I have is why you don't have Jonathan Bonner listed. Coach Kelly spoke highly of him this spring. Was he just trying to boost his confidence? Thanks in advance ! (I did not follow the team in spring like I used to.).

Hey lech, how many of the guys you listed have less tackles than Christian McCaffrey? Have fun with that......

I remember when Eric Crouch set all kinds of records & won the Heisman. He was legit. What a great NFL career he had? And around the same time Justin Tuck was doing nothing. Well, except for winning Super Bowls later on in his career.
Sorry, I thought this where we discuss college players who throw up large numbers & win awards compared to players who actually are legit at all levels?

Would you care to answer the question I posted?
"How many of the guys you (bodi) listed have less tackles than Christian McCaffrey?"

What kind of stupid question is that?
Why would anyone care about it?
What value does it have?

You try to flame with the absolute stupidest points.

Btw...McCaffery didn't have a single tackle last year
(So your point is both stupid and counter productive)

Would you care to answer the question I posted?

I'm just curious what your question has to do with anything? Or on a more serious note, why do you care so much about being negative to a guy (Bodi) who loves his team?
I just sit back & read so many negative comments people put on here about everything & just ask myself what is going wrong in these people's lives? If you don't like ND football, cool, but give it a rest. Why waste so much of your life discussing something you don't like?
What do you like? Let's discuss that instead. Keep it positive.

But to answer the real football question, which is the quality of ND's line, I will take the word of scouts, who seem to think it will be the strength of the defense.
To answer your direct question, I don't & will never care how many tackles McCaffrey has. Ever. Peyton Manning has more career tackles than Jaylon Smith & Joey Bosa combined.

Your example of Manning/Bosa/Smith is not equal to my question regarding McCaffrey. They have yet to suit up in the NFL. There are guys on Bodi's list that have suited up for ND...... I see a handful of posts responding and it appears everyone is stumped. It's a very straightforward question.
PS Lyght and Burris are terrific....

Dealin Hayes has suited up for ND?
(Bc he's one of the guys I specifically called out)

And literally everyone had at least as many tackles as McCaffery last year

There you go again making stuff up. Please point out where I said Daelin Hayes suited up.

I fully appreciate your sleight of hand with "And literally everyone had at least as many tackles as McCaffery last year".

You also wrote, "Btw...McCaffery didn't have a single tackle last year." Indeed, that's correct and he still has managed to out produce how many players listed in the OP?

Again, "how many of the guys you listed have less tackles than Christian McCaffrey? Have fun with that......"

Lastly, we were # 74 and # 72 versus Rushing D these last 2 years.
We were # 70 and # 78 in sacks for the same period.

Here are some reasons to expect improvement:
1 blind optimism
2 the fact that we stunk so bad we have to improve
3 Lyght and Burris

PS I will await your thesis on why special teams tackles aren't equal to D line rushing tackles...

I'm not sure what Christian McCaffrey tackle stats have to do with anything. I do know that he and DeShone Kizer had the same number of rushing touchdowns in 2014. I don't know what that's supposed to indicate either though.

No one had fewer tackles than McCaffery last year

Your posts literally couldn't get any more stupid.

Comparing DL production to special teams tackles is the latest in your long line of moron-isms

Well, folks here are touting our D. I am thoroughly enjoying that you caught on to the fact that McCaffrey had no tackles last year. That should make the math easier for you/others.

Again, "how many of the guys you (bodi) listed have less tackles than Christian McCaffrey?"

It's such a simple question....

None.

None have fewer tackles than McCaffery had last year.

Thanks for asking a question that has absolutely no relevance to the discussion, at all, no matter what the answer is.

This question is very indicative of your knowledge of football and overall intelligence in general.

Again, I'm embarrassed for you.

I am enjoying your and others avoiding to answer.
PS Your blather on defensive personnel being better suited this year belongs in a vomitorium.

How can you have less then zero? Negative tackles? Kind of a dumb point you are trying to make.

We have numbers but who really steps up ,Rochell is so far,our best lineman , Tillery needs to get a lot better and become a force., Jones , Cage , both injured J .Hayes (red-shirted), and Trumbetti who contributed last year. ,wondering how much they improve or how well they recover from injuries . And it looks like they will carry most of the load . Now we have to look at 5-star and 4- star freshmen D.Hayes , Kareem, Okwara and their immediate impact.

Finally who among the red-shirted or players who got little playing time ? Tiassum ,Dew-Treadway, Bonner, Taylor ,Dickerson ,Ogundago,Montelus. Any of these players going to be stand outs or just players that spell the starters

Jaron Jones (if healthy) will be the best on the d line. Gilmore thinks Bonner has much ability and expects him to be get lots of pt.

What surprise player(s) or under the radar player who sat on the bench or was red-shirted will emerge as a real force on defense .Not talking about the starters ?
