I think Kelly will get Notre Dame turned around. He just needs more time. Kelly has been successful everywhere he has been. If I am your AD I give Kelly at least two more years to get things figured out and see how it goes with his new Defensive Coordinator hire.

Well, the problem is this. He's been here for awhile and he has made coaching decisions that have been questionable from the beginning. He seems to be set in his ways (stubborn) when mapping out a game plan and is resistant to variate from that plan if need be. His sideline demeanor doesn't bother me in the least and his press conference statements are the least of problems. His recruiting has been good and he has developed 3 stars into NFL quality material. It's his game day management and decision making that drives me crazy. All that other stuff is just white noise. It's time to get this program in a steady consistent 9 plus win count. Just when you look at one issue (defense), another pops up (OL), then another (Special Teams). I don't feel sorry for BK and it is time to right the ship with no excuses, starting now. I don't call for his dismissal but I am anticipating an important DC hire in the off season.

If Kelly stays, which is my hunch, the DC hire might be the most important coaching hire in ND history. And it's not even a head coach. We don't have Alabama or OSU talent on defense, but we have top 25 to top 30 talent, at worst. We need someone to get us playing top 25 to top 30 defense on the field. That's the next guy's job. Kelly will live or die based on how successful the new DC is.

to hire a name DC coach, that guy has to believe BK will survive the '17 season and beyond
then that guy will view the talent, especially the front 4 then front seven. for prospects of success
then he will consider the problems ND has recruiting.

jmo: if I was such a guys, I would listen, say thank you but I have more promising options;
because if he does not have more promising options then he is probably some one else's BVG.

Kelly is on the hook, ready to be cooked

More time more time more time more time...blah blah blah

More time does NOT help with being unprepared, player regression, calling 37 drop backs in a hurricane, time outs to punt, red zone fiasco, empty sets on the 6 yard line, blaming players instead of real reasons, excusing with shopping from a different aisle...I could go on and on and on.

This is year 7....

He's actually getting worse , just like his players do from year one, two..to year three, four

But I know...more time more time.

We DON'T have recruiting "problems" relative to 90% of FBS teams. And it's not likely that many of the other 10% need a new DC for 2017.

Are you pennick in disguise?

Don't you know Gruff? Gruff has posted on and off for years on Rivals pretending to be an Irish fan while on the Michigan board, he's a pretend Wolvie. He has many usernames and pikehead is just the latest. If he doesn't use "gruff" in his handle, he usually gives himself away by using poster's names in his topics or pretending to be your buddy.
Maybe he's an MSU fan or a Bucknut in disguise? Think some think he's a Rutgers fan. One thing ND and Michigan posters can agree on, Gruff is
annoying. :)

You just can't make this stuff up. Thanks for the heads up.

Who would possibly consider coming here with 8 & 4 half-way out the door? Isn't going to happen. Not a really quality DC. You think he wants his resume tarnished with 8 & 4 blood? Just not happening. Hudson will stay. Same with the recruits, the best will take a pass. Blood's in the water and it's just a matter of time before the big shark, Swarbrick, gets hungry. That's a death spiral, can't get out until its blown up.

^ well that is a theory;
but it ain't the only possible theory.

JMO, the only way a prominent established, but NOT retreaded, DC would join ND is if his hire was either directly by or influenced by JS. There has to be some kind of assurance and confidence that this is not a desperation situation with bleek prospects for success. It cannot be thought of as ER Room strategy.
This has to be a 3 year plan. Do fans think Kelly gets another 3 year plan? Would JS sell that to a prospective hire?

Need more time to figure out how to throw the ball 30 times in a hurricane.

The assumption we have to make here is that there is a DC somewhere who will actually believe this. AD would have to make the sales presentation of his life. In other words, would you come here if you were offered the most comfortable chair on the Titanic? If Kelly survives another year, Hudson will be back.

Getting hundreds of thousands of dollars to coach defense is better than freezing to death in a ocean. You throw out clichés like Kizer throws out incompletions in tropical storms.

First, it will take a lot more than a few hundred thousand dollars to get a "quality" DC. Second, in the end you're still dead. Rather pick a much better situation, and that's what every coach's agent would be telling their clients. Look elsewhere.

well, Jack needs to say this is a 3yr effort to get things 'righted' and even give assurance the staff remains; at least remains unless there are resignations.
Fans will be dissatified but, that is the way that you might get some interest.

OP, I am all in favor of redemption. So if Kelly can turn it around I am all for it Unfortunately, I have my doubts.

I just want to see Kelly do just enough to get that job offer he wants so he can bolt...No more, no less. If he decides to stay....the underachievement continues....if he's gone....winning at the highest level...against the best is possible again.
