BK said ND kicked the 31-yard field goal because ND had the wind at their back. He astutely observed that the kickers were nailing 50 yarders with the wind pre-game. So he made sure ND would have the wind in the 4th quarter.

That's why he didn't try to take the lead there.

I could not have disagreed more with the decision. If you kick the field goal, to win you need to get the ball back from an offense that has not punted all game. If you go for it and don't make it, to win you need to get the ball back from an offense that has not punted all game. Obviously the difference is in #1 you need a FG to win and in #2 you need a TD. But that difference is more than offset by where you are on the field, how many yards you need for a first down, and the fact the your own offense has been stopped only once all game. With 4 yds to go you can use every play in the play book, Navy cannot sit on the pass, drop 8 guys into coverage, they have to play straight up defense. If you don't get it, you have 87 yards in which to try and stop Navy and get the ball back. If you kick the field goal that most likely becomes 75 yards. Kelly made a very sound traditional coaching decision in a very unusual non-traditional game situation. No guarantee that it would have made a difference, but IMHO it was the wrong decision.

You're right. He's a genius that never got the ball back because it was impossible for his defense to get a stop almost all day.

He's the best at losing close games. It almost looks to be by design. Just read his quotes. It's the same crap you find on here from some people. Well, we're not losing 31-0.......

It's like he outsmarted himself with the genius tactic of having the wind at our back for the 4th quarter.

Totally agree with TWalsh - it would have given a longer field if they didn't convert and you had to come up with a stop one way or the other. What happened to the CBK "You better get used to it"?? He is only a gunslinger except when he isn't??

he is what he is! by now, do you see?

treating a decent fine young man like Dayne Crist in the manner he was treated told so much about the person.

The situation was ugly. That can not come from a 'kind' heart.

Kelly would have looked like a genius if after kicking a FG to get within 1 point, had tried an on side kick in an effort to get the ball back right away. But no ... he has Yoon kick into the end zone.

Well, Navy did punt once -- and ND's special teams screwed that up (although, I was not aware that replay can call a foul). Instead of being up by 3 and getting the ball against a defense that could not stop it, Navy keeps the ball, scores and goes up 4.

I think it was challenged by Navy therefore they can review the play.
