Stanford has had success limiting injuries by requiring yoga and pilates. Their guy slashed injury rates 87 percent from 2007 to 2012! Turley was 2013 strength and conditioning coach of the year.

But you really have to look at this! This is the NCAA football injury report for this year.

http://www.donbest.com/ncaaf/injuries/

Look at this list! And compare ND to Stanford. It is f-ing astounding! They have two listed!!!

Stanford is also down the Road from Balco Labs. Those Barry Bonds Milkshakes cut down on injuries a lot I'm told.

Actually the opposite is true. Substances that enhance the rapid growth of muscle tissue produce strong muscle cells that out strip the growth of tissue in tendons and cartilage resulting in pulled muscles and other related injuries such as muscle tears.

Best post in months

We are in the dark ages. If there was doubt about Longo's approach, there should be none now. Yoga should be mandatory. It would not prevent Russell or zaires injury but may have on tranquil' and Crawford's and other tissue related

Our injuries are glaring. We must be the team with the most.

Dp you actually know that ND does not use yoga? I am not convinced that yoga will help with ligament injuries.

78. I clearly said it would not help with fractures. So about yoga, there is still a lot of macho prejudice toward doing yoga. I can speak from experience, it is transformational. I grudgingly gave it a try and was I ever surprised

I had severe clicking in my knee and thought I needed a second scoping. All better now all due to stretching

Many teams use it. If ND uses it, I have never heard one mention of it.

With all the injuries we have I don't understand why there are not questions to Kelly about the ND conditioning program
Then we would know if yoga is part of the program. I do not think it is. Given tight schedules and class demands, players likely need to do yoga and stretching on their own. They would need education and guidance on what to do. I have not read or heard anything on this

I've read that Stanford's S&C coach really focuses on ankle mobility as a means of preventing ACL and other lower body injuries.

I don't know how much Yoga would help as opposed to other forms of stretching. But the guy that invented yoga pants deserves a Nobel prize.

This has to be the funniest thread I've seen on here in a long time. Dude it's football injuries are unfronturnately a part of the game. Its not about Pilates, yoga and whatever else you wanna come up with. Sometimes you're lucky ie Stanford and sometimes you're not ie ND. Don't over think this seriously.

very good post. excellent article. the numbers don't lie. The ND way of doing S and C is archaic and so are a lot of other teams. ND needs to change the way they do things in S & C. There is too much at stake. Stanford will be basically at full strength and ND is decimated w/ injuries again this season. Just like last season. When will enough be enough and ND figures it out ?

Yet Stanford has been 'lucky' for seven years! I'm sorry but this is about balance, how you fall, etc... Obviously some injuries are unavoidable but other are about tensing your body or falling wrong. Why not at least look into something that has been proven to work for Stanford. If it was one year I'd say fluke, but this program has been in place for eight with real results. I say at least give it a look. Are we just unlucky? We have had more injuries than most other Div 1 schools.

Yoga and pilates are for "Girly" men. Longo has all 85 scholarship players strong as hell !! NDs football players always play full out and risk life and limb.

Longo rules !! Next man in just as good as the player they replace !

Bodi, come on brother. Longo Mongo ! Muscle heads ! It's all about flexibility and being elastic and strong. Longo does not have 85 strong - he is currently light about 15 who are on the shelf w/ various ailments. He probably has around 70 or so right now. Maybe if ND paid him by the number of healthy players each week - he'd rethink his current program.

Majority of the players you listed have lower body injuries it has been a problem not just at Notre dame but in football in general with the rule changes lowering the contact point you have seen concussions go down but lower body injuries rise the combination of players getting hit lower and in a lot of cases it is just bad luck some blame turf equipment training it is just shit happens when you play a violent sport take a look at the NFL concussions are down but lower body injuries are up I don't think it is fair to blame Longo who has a long sucessfull career for those injuries check out the list of players with injuries in the NFL Majority are Knee Achilles Foot Hip and Hamstring

This is still American football correct? There are still violent impacts, strange bizarre angles at weird times....correct?

Times when we go through a stretch of good luck and times when the bear gets you. We've been courting the bear for a while now but things will change for the better. Odds are anyways.

Yoga, p 90 x ...blah blah.....

Run the ****ing hill......stretch....snap up, go play.

Good God.

Excellent point and I have been saying this all year!! I'm a CSCS, NASM-CES, NASM-PES certified trainer and exercise Science degree and it is very clear the past 2 years we have way too many 'non contact' injuries!!! Folston, Tranquil, Crawford and now Russel ALL 'non-contact' injuries!! These are preventable with proper stablity training EG Standing cable chest press on ONE leg versus flat bench chest press that requires no stability. So many 'alternative' exercises for strengthening to prepare for 'combat' NOT in the slow controlled environment of the 'gym'!!!

How exactly does the standing, one leg, cable chest press help prevent these lower body injuries? Just trying to understand. Thanks.

Guys I think its safe to say that the staff is working to prevent injuries. Cough Field Turf Cough.

Football is a contact sport and these guys are not straining hamstrings here like they used to when Weis was here. Many of the injuries are either contact injuries or bad luck this year.

Also Russells injury was a break as his leg planted on a hit. No stretching or balance work is going to fix that.

Tranquill landed very awkwardly on a celebration jump and put a ton of pressure on his knee.

It is training in an 'unstable' off balanced environment just like football. Players cut, twist and are being pushed from all different directions and if your body is not trained in this environment, these stabilizing muscles don't fire. Perfect example is the training for gymnasts, Yoga (standing on one leg). In the training world they call it 'sports specific"

NOT true!! MOST 'non contact' injuries are preventable!! Tranquill, Folston, Crawford are ALL non contact ACL tears and these are preventable!! ND has WAY more injuries than most universities!! The Broken ankles are 'bad luck' but NOT Tranquill's!! Strength coaches should be under scrutiny just like other position coaches PLUS our OL are not nearly explosive as they should be!!
