I asked Paul Longo - Notre Dame's strength coach - at Media Day about how athletes seem to recover faster and faster from injuries today, which is especially interesting to hear now after Wednesday night's news about Shawn Crawford's torn ACL.
"It used to be guys with an ACL injury, sometimes they were never the same player again," Longo said. "They'd put a guy in a cast for six months and not move it, etc. Now we get everything moving right away.
"I'd mostly attribute the improved recovery times to the teamwork of the doctor, the trainer and the strength coach. They're all on the same page. The condition that these guys are in as well, when they come in that really helps. In the old days we'd use the training camp to get in shape — now they never get out of shape. So when you're in that kindof shape and you get hurt, your body can recover faster. We also use the philosophy of that if you have an injury, say a knee injury, 10 percent of your body is injured. So we train the other 90 percent at a high level, and psychologically, that keeps them in there at a high level and speeds up the recovery."
