The Athletic had an update on the meetings held this week by the College Football Playoff Management Committee. A few excerpts:

Earlier this week at a particularly swanky hotel, the CFP management committee, the group tasked with overseeing the sport’s prized postseason event, failed to reach a consensus on the right size for an expanded Playoff field.....When they departed on Thursday evening, they had no tangible progress to disclose......

Executive director Bill Hancock said that some commissioners still support an eight-team format and others prefer a 12-team model......“There is a consensus that the expansion of the CFP would be good for college football,” he said. “It’s just a matter of how.”

There are immovable objects in the pro-12 camp, such as the SEC, Notre Dame and the five Group of 5 leagues who want access and as many at-large spots as possible. There is a small but feisty minority, led by the ACC, that has been adamant that an eight-team format with automatic qualifiers for the Power 5 champions is their only acceptable outcome.

Multiple parties involved in the process have characterized the process to me as deeply frustrating. There are those who believe their peers in certain leagues need to stop posturing and start working together. There are others who still speak of friction between commissioners in the wake of waves of conference realignment that saw people in that room poaching valuable members from one another.
