Run "inside zone"... I've rewatched all of ND's offensive snaps from 2015 (mostly because I like stealing ideas for my own offense) and one thing was obvious. As explosive as both Prosise and Adams were on "outside zone" and the various "pull plays" ND runs, the injury to Tarean Folston really stripped ND of their "inside" guy. Folston has the patience and vision to find room inside, something neither of the previously mentioned backs has shown yet. Both of them will drag the pile and break arms tackles, but there were many times throughout the season that if they could have hidden behind a block for an extra half second, or let a double team climb to chip a linebacker, there would have been creases in the middle of the defense.

If you want to see what it looks like, go back and watch Theo Riddick and his knack for finding room on the inside. Not everything had to be a big play. Folston showed signs of being able to do that as a freshman as well. Kelly commented in his most recent presser that Tarean gives them that back that can really stick it up inside.

Now the key becomes getting enough balance that you're not predictable depending on what back is in the game...

Here is my prediction. If ND's offense is going to be as potent as I think it is this year, Josh Adams is going to rip off some big runs and make some stellar plays that will find their way onto the highlight reel. In the meantime, the guy that is going to do a lot of the dirty work up inside that will allow drives to continue and stay on schedule is #25. He won't don't it half as pretty as Adams does it, but if you enjoy quality running back play and a guy who can turn what should be 1 or 2 yards into 4-6 yards, tune in to watch #25. While he lacks breakaway speed, he's short and strong and has great vision and patience. As soon as he trusts the knee again he'll be a huge piece of this offense.

Hopefully those inside runs are in the red zone and tanslates to touchdowns.

Josh Adams was a true frosh---He will be bigger and stronger his sophomore season. I think you underestimate his inside running--

Folston is very good but he will be sharing the workload and Adams should be getting more carries. I think Josh Adams is going to be a super star. I think is well on his way after his great frosh season.
I could see Folston getting tough yards and he may have a better offensive line to run behind then he did as a sophomore so I he would be a great benefit in closing out games. too.

Folston absolutely showed his ability to be patient and disciplined as an inside runner from the start, and we will need this from him this year. He also showed the Ability and willingness to pass block and know his assignments as a true freshman, something Adams displayed his first year as well. I view Folston as capable of running inside or outside effectively, with outside runs capped at about fifteen yards. I view Adams as a potentially good inside runner and a great outside runner with outside and off tackle runs capped by the end zone.

IIO, how much do you think that is down to experience, compared to natural running instincts? Obviously w/ Adams being a freshman, and Prosise playing RB for the first time, do you think they lacked the running back savvy to run that play effectively, or do you think it was more just a lack of experience?

Folston's best traits have always been
1. Balance
2. Vision
3. Instincts
The way he combines these traits allows him to be a very good zone runner and get the "hidden yardage" on the inside zone runs, where he turns runs that last year went for 0-1 yards (far too often) into 6-7 yards.

These runs don't looks sexy becuAse he's not breaking them for huge gainers and he's not getting the "extra yardage" but just bulldozing over tacklers, or even juking them.....he's avoiding them through proper positioning on the run.

We're going to benefit GREATLY from having that back.

However, I share your concern about tipping our hand on whether the run will be inside/outside based on which RB is in the game.

My hope is that both backs can progress enough with the "other skill" that it's not as obvious and that the QB keeps on the zone-read looks can help with balance as well

Really wish Prosise had stayed, as he could have been on the field at the same time as Folston, to help balance tendencies as well

Adams taking a major step forward in his ability to read blocks and be patient between the tackles and in the backfield would be a major help hear as well

You are one egomaniac that's for sure.

Excited to see Folston run again... Before his injury I had him as my MVP for 2015 -- I just thought he showed so much promise in 2014. Breaking tackles, ducking under tackles but most importantly being patient and finding space for 5-6 yard gains. Can't wait to see what this backfield can do this year -- and if Malik starts that is just another RB defenses will have to worry about.

I hope we're better at getting to the QB. imo Cage, Hayes, Jones, Rochelle, Tillery, Trumbetti ... are key to this season's success. The D really needs to step up. Year 3 will tell the tale.
