If I was Hudson, Gilmore, Lyght and Elston here are some changes I would make, personnel wise and scheme wise.
Personnel:
1) Move Isaac Rochell to DT. That would give me a 4-man inside rotation of Rochell, Tillery, Cage and Jones. That would allow them to stay fresh and give them a bit more of a disruptive force inside. If Notre Dame can control the inside of the line it can stop teams from running well right now. This is especially true for Syracuse. It is pointless having Rochell playing DE against a team that wants to throw to the perimeter and run between the tackles. I'd also consider getting Pete Mokwuah a series or two during the game. He plays with a bit more fire than Jones and Cage, although he's not quite as skilled.
2) Move Jay Hayes to SDE. My rotation at SDE would be Hayes, Jonathan Bonner and Khalid Kareem, and all three would play. Hayes would give a few more snaps than Bonner, and Kareem would get the fewest, but he needs to play.
3) WDE rotation would be Trumbetii as the starter but I'd give snaps to Daelin Hayes and Julian Okwara as well. Those three would also be my two ends in the Nickel package, and they'd rotate, but until Trumbetti proves he can win on the edge, I'd probably go with Hayes and Okwara in obvious passing situations.
4) Change my nickel personnel. The DL would be a combination of the 3 WDE's at 2 spots, and a rotation of all the interior guys except for Cage.
5) I would tell Hudson the following, "If you want to have any chance at keeping this job, you better find a way to get Asmar Bilal on the field and to use his speed."
6) I would find a role for Ashton White, even if that means moving him to safety.
Scheme:
1) Start using your DL to attack: Get some push up front. Stop with all the catching and wanna-be 2-gap defense they have been playing. Fire off, blow up the OL and get a push. Play downhill with your DL. It wouldn't hurt to teach them to get their hands up against quick game, either.
2) Play downhill with your LB's. Refer to my article from last week where I showed the MSU LB's. Play like that. Let them play downhill. Simply their reads and have them start flying downhill more.
3) If you want to press, play more 2 man, where your CB's have some help over top. Otherwise, play more 4 to the field where you take away the quick game with the SLB or Nickel and your CB's play over the top. You can mix up some press, but you can't keep putting your CB's in press until they start playing with more confidence.
Practice:
1) Have some damn fun. Let the kids loose, coach them up, hold them accountable and be demanding, but let them be loose and let them have some damn fun.
