Hope finally that Schrauth and Spindler turn out great. Wagner,Chan,Coogan all develop faster than expected.

I heard Billy was playing extremely well during bowl practices. Rocco is a bit of a mystery, but he is playing behind NFL players for the most part

We lose Patterson and Lugg (both OGs) and add 5 Frosh. We have 18 OL on the 2023 roster. Yet, we are uncertain on successors. Kristofic is the only guy with any experience.

Seems like we’ve plenty of depth on the OL, especially is we’re pretty sure that Billy steps in at one of the G spots.

Is there any sense in moving a big body from the OL to the DL? Who is a realistic candidate, if any?

Why do you say we are uncertain?

Some on here have said Rocco should switch to D line. Any thoughts?? Wagner's athleticism would bring it at DE. But would ND lose a potentially good ot?

If Rocco does not start than give him a chance on DL. Most OT play DL in high school . Another 320 pounder on the DL would be a welcome .
He has slow feet and isnt overly athletic. Why would we move him to D?

Cross Rubio Onye AK Ford etc have been playing there for years. He wont play on defense

Because they do not weigh 320lbs. ND lacks a run stuffer in the middle of the line just like Bama, UGA, Texas and the rest of the crowd or he will hit the transfer portal

You dont think hed hit the portal if you tried to move his position?

Just having a big guy does nothing. They have to be able to move and play

Rocco would go the Dillon Gibbons route before doing a late-career transfer that would end any chance of making the NFL. Dillon would not have played this year and now he'll be drafted.

Because you don't have to be a run stopper, you have to be a block eater closing a gap, letting others make the play.

It's not. Especially if mf really wants to run more 3-3-5. You gotta have bigger guys or ND will get rolled against sec just like tcu.
We should be running a frichan 5-2-4 with our personnel and putting Morrison and hart on islands…. Slight exaggeration but we have no business running 3-3-5 right now

It really is.
1. If Rocco doesn't play at some point he's leaving.

2. You lack a ton of size inside outside of Rubio.

Cross, onye,Ford are only 275-280 and that's early season weights. They arent the answer at the nose and Rubio cannot play all game. Rocco also played DT in high school.

So again, short of your opinion, if you have a need the portal can't fix that isn't on your current dl lineup, why would you not consider a guy on the roster that has the size and strength and played the position in high school?

While being recruited to Michigan...

As of current, Michigan is recruiting him to play on the offensive line, but even that comes with a level of openness, as a former coach in Ann Arbor first talked to him about playing defense.

“I believe – before Coach Mattison left, it was about 50/50,” Spindler told WolverinesWire. “I know Coach Warinner and Coach Harbaugh wanted me on the offensive side, but Coach Mattison really strived for me to play on the defensive side.

“The DNA from my father playing in the NFL and his motor and his tenacity to really get after guys and cause offensive coordinators have schemes against him – they could definitely see the bloodlines from me to him. They said, ‘It’s 50/50, so when he gets up here, we’ll make a decision.

He was totally open to playing dline coming out of high school, for those of you asking why he'd not leave.

so again @Golson5 why is this a bad idea when you had to take a grad transfer from Harvard last year to sure up the interior dline? When you are looking for help from Utah St on the dline? A guy Michigan wanted for the dl, is literally doing nothing on your roster currently and wasn't recruited by the current online coach who has about 8 guys competing for the spot Rocco would take.

ill wait.

Because his DL film wasnt that impressive for a player on our level. And now he hasnt played there in 3 years.

Big kahuna is another big body you didnt mention. Thats 2 guys. We dont need a body over there. We need someone who can play.

At worst hes 2nd team OG so if an injury occurs he'll be next man up. Leave him there

My point all along is that Rocco will likely leave if he’s 2nd team OG after Spring practice.

Disagree about his HS film as a defensive lineman. Thought he was very good.

Would not even consider moving him unless he can’t win a starting OG spot this Spring. In that event, I think the Staff and Rocco should evaluate his ability to contribute and play on the DL as an alternative to losing him via the portal.

His film was actually really good at Dt. It was just better at ol for Notre Dame. The point remains. If he's not going to see the field as an guard, he absolutely could play dt next year in rotation.

Big kahuna tore his ACL last spring when he was 310 lbs. He was down to 290 mid season this year. At that size a full comeback is very tough from an ACL. They won't know what he can do until late spring camp and then it's a projection. Your plan is to depend on two 300 lbs dts that have very limited playing time and one that's coming of a torn knee.

You absolutely need another body there.

Tillery made that move. Benefitted from it.

AK played late in this season in a game. He is full go right now or he wouldnt have played this season.

We have about 8 bodies to rotate at DT. If they can land someone in the portal, thats what they should do. Rocco isnt going to play on defense after 3 years away and so many guys ahead of him

Because we don't know who they are. I have heard 5 possibles and then there are guys like Jagusah. Do you know who the 2 successor are?
We know Alt and Fisher are locks. We know Correll is #1 now. We know Schrauth is labeled first guard to replace Patterson or Lugg at end of bowl prep.

Who are the 5 possibles?

vs BC

How long is Jagusah going to be sidelined for after his surgery? I know he does not show up to ND until June but will he be ready to go or is this a surgery where he will miss summer / 2023?

6 of those guys are undersized currently. You have two dts of any size to stand up to big southern teams like Georgia and Bama. If Notre Dame goes more 3-3-5 or multiple look, there needs to be a 300 lber on the field at all times. Otherwise...see tcu.

There are few 300 lb Portal guys because they get sucked up immediately. ND got very lucky with smith last year.

You have a 310lb four star dt sitting on the bench (he was ranked higher than Jr at Dt fyi). If he isn't getting in at guard there is ZERO reason not to let him eat space as a dt if he's willing.

We have a ton of olinemen. We have TWO big dts one coming off torn ACL as a 300 lber. This should be a no brainer.

If he doesn't break through as guard this year he likely won't. Your argument is to basically let him go portal because you think after three years in the nd strength program he can't be athletic enough to play dt at Notre Dame.

Yes. A real talent, but a bit of a renaissance man with Interests well beyond football. My Raiders picked him up midway through this season, and he showed occasional flashes, but just occasional. In contrast, Rocco appears to be all about football with every desire to excel with Intent of playing in the league. I just can’t see him accepting 2nd string this year. He either wins a starting OG spot, transitions to the DL, or enters the portal. Huge Spring for him.

He'll have the whole spring to compete at OL. If he doesnt win the job, he isnt going to be able to switch to D in the summer and be readu to compete on D this year.

He'd be fine if it was rotational and part of the move to 3-3-5 as ng. It's literally a space eating position. He just tries to occupy two gaps. It's more about high motor and physicality than technique. He really would be fine.

If he's going to nt in the 4 man front he is there to take a double team and stop runs to his gap assignment. Size and motor is more important than technique and pursuit. It's literally a position to eat space and let others make plays. Namely our super athletic linebacker group.

In either scheme it's physically demanding and you will have to rotate big guys. On third and longs they'd come off to put in a pursuit lineup.
