We looked awful early on D vs. Clemson, USC and others... We can't continue this.

Thoughts as to why we come out so flat?

How different are the opponents starting compared to the tape that was available? Certainly Clemson did. USC had some plays made by their great athletes. And of course, an attacking defense can always be prone to mistakes against counters, reverses, and tricek plays. Sometimes aggression takes charge vs. the assignment.

The opponents give out scholarships too. They also gameplan. ND played an option team the week before. SC has a few(many) explosive skill guys.

I wouldn't say that out loud in public. Some will take great offense to the obvious.
More like we aren't miserable pricks that are happy to be 6 and 1. We realize that the other teams block and run hard and catch the football. Far from perfect but it has been an enjoyable season to date.

Stop being a putz and enjoy the season.
Pennick --one thing is obvious Kelly + VanGorder are pretty dam good at adjustments at halftime .
it's so obvious

Clemson and USC have combined for two TD's in the second half vs The Fighting Irish --

BTW speaking of adjustments it was Head Coach Brian Kelly that got up Kevarie's ass and implored him to make a play by specifically telling KR to play the ball when it's in the air --kudos BK

I'm not arguing with you, but did you see him say this to Russel, or did you just infer that?

I watched Kelly's post game interview -- Kelly said it in his interview

Interesting. I was going to make a post about how the DB shouldn't always look for the ball, which is counterintuitive to most. I've only evaluated the first series.

Russell got beat on a perfect pass. He had pretty tight coverage. The ball came to the receiver the exact moment Russell looked for the ball. Not sure if he was in good enough position to look for the ball or not.

I'll see how the rest of the game looked tonight or tomorrow.

I think my biggest complaint over the years w DB's in both the pro's and college they dont make the turn while the ball is in the air . It makes me crazy esp given that it is an automatic pass inteference if you make contact with your back to the ball in addition obviously that you can't make a play on the ball because you have no visual on it - I don't get it frankly ,

Kelly addressed it and that play may have saved the game for ND

Last point one way to make up for getting beat on a play is get turned and possibly get a piece of the football

That's what I'm saying. If you're not in position to cover the receiver (break up the pass/secure the tackle), you're not supposed to look for the ball. That's because the QB is throwing the ball to the receiver and not the DB. I'm not being smart either. If a DB does that without being "in phase", he won't be in position to knock the ball away or make the tackle. A lot of people don't know that.

That play I was referencing, Russell was really close to being "in phase", but maybe not quite there. It also looked like he turned for the ball at the last instant and that's when the ball got there. Perhaps of he played the man, he might have made the play. I'm not being critical either as it was a bang-bang play and he had pretty tight coverage. Not sure how the ND coaches would grade that play.
