It seems that ND could improve greatly if he would just let someone else manage games. He recruits well, his teams never quit and except for yesterday show good sportsmanship, but his game day decisions are strange.

My seats are behind Shane Foley's; a former SC QB who knows football. At the start of the game he said, "They are kicking to Adoree, are they nuts?." No one kicks to Adoree except Kelly. We have had some pretty good returners (Think Anthony Davis) and Adoree is our all time leader. Kelly also failed to key on Adoree when he made one of his rare appearance on offense. These mental errors cost ND 21 points.

Seems like he has some good qualities and his weakness is easy to fix.

The easy fix is to fire Kelly and Jack.

That is true but you know that isn't happeQUOTE]
Nothing is written in stone when it comes to college football coaches. UOJ was ready to fire Helton after 4 games and it looked like a done deal. ND admin has much more negatives against Kelly and Jack now.

Kelly coming back is not a sure thing just because he states his intentions. To your point, I would expect a quality ST coach to decide when to kick or not to kick to a game changer like Adoree; and I would expect a quality DC to recognize Adoree inserted into the offense and to plan accordingly. Kelly has neither, but this is his fault, and he should be held accountable.

Well there are no sure things but Kelly coming back is close.

Bob Davie, Ty Willingham, and Charlie Weis have a few things in common:

None of them had Declan Sullivan, Manti Teo's girlfriend, the Philly Eagles interview, and NCAA academic sanctions hanging around their necks....He's got to go. Even Delta Airlines has baggage requirements....

Beach,
The main issue is Kelly himself. Never have I seen a coach not take accountability for issues that have occurred under his watch. It is irrelevant whether or not he had any culpability in these issues. A leader would lead and not deflect responsibility away to someone else. That is what he has done his entire time as NDs coach. His arrogance prevents him from changing. It is painfully obvious to those who follow ND football that his style of football doesn't work. I said it before and I'll say it again. Notre Dame plays flag football under Kelly. His teams are soft. I never seen a worse short yardage team at ND than a Kelly team. But instead of seeing that what he's doing isn't working, he blames players on lack of execution. Bear Bryant himself went to a pass style football in the late 60s and early 70s and the results were less than stellar. I think he
lost 7 straight bowl games. Then he reevaluated what he was doing and took personal inventory. He changed his offense to the wishbone and Bama reclaimed being a power that they were in the early to mid 1960s. My point is simple. Bryant had the courage to look at what he was doing and realize it wasn't working. Kelly has shown no ability to do that. If Kelly is to coach next year, he needs to overhaul everything from offense to defense to special teams. Until that happens, look for more of the same next year.

Good points. If he can't learn there is nothing you can do.

Add playing #24 Nick Coleman to the list of Kelly mistakes. When you watch Coleman play you see the perfect storm of poor fundamentals and little to no aggression or effort. The guy probably belongs on the offense and that is being generous. I don't like to pick on players but he is not on this level.

Blame Kelly for the win loss record and coaching the team, but don't pile on with the rest of it, Declan, Manti, or the academic scandal. Those are not if his doing. I want him out, but at least be fair

So all we need a game manager, special teams coach, strength & conditioning coach, and defensive coordinator.

TK Irish - a very good post and spot on.

The 1,000 Dollar question is how does Jack Swarbrick and the ND President Jenkins not see this as well ?

What have Sawbrick and Jenkins been watching for the last 7 seasons ? Do they even watch the games or they just entertaining large donors at games w/ absolutely NO Clue what is going on down on the field of play ?

Die hard - your right about Manti and the academic scandal - but Declan ? Who sent that kid up the scissor lift in a windstorm ? To film a practice ? Really, ND does not even practice hard - what does film even provide ND ?

Someone could have had the foresight to say - "probably not a good idea to have our filmer go up in the scissor lift today w/ winds at 35 mph ?"

Why couldn't of BK had some common sense that day ? His lack of awareness / common sense cost that kid his life. He is the head coach who wanted his practices filmed.

the other things - I agree w/ - not on BK.

Declan though - he has some accountability for that one - and I bet he thinks about that one all the time - unfortunately.

Actually the gusts of winds that day were in the 50 MPH range ! 50 MPH - BK needed to have some awareness that day and he was absolutely clueless.

You could be right beach, Kelly might do a lot better if he just played the CEO role that some coaches have done successfully, like Bobby Bowden. But unfortunately, he wants to run the team hands-on and call the plays, etc., too.

AMEN!!! Again not picking on one player but have you ever seen #24 make a good play all season? Taking it one step further any time #24 is on the field a big play is given up.

Probably a good recruiter but his game day decision making is bad. That translates into hard to take losses( see Tulsa) and that will hurt his recruiting

Kelly hasn't called the plays in two seasons. He hasn't been involved with the offense since firing VanGorder? I'm ready for a new coach too, but let's be fair! Oh by the way, the offense fell apart after Kelly left the room; and the defense began to improve each week. He was DC at GVST before being hired as HC.

I guess the best way to describe my mood is forlorn. My head has told me for years that the administration did not put a high value on a winning football program and I've stated that for years. In all honestly, in my heart I didn't believe that and I guess I held out hope that they just didn't know what to do to get the program back on track.

With each passing day I'm losing any faith at all and what my head says, my heart is starting to believe also. In 7 years Kelly has had 1 season that we could point to and be proud of and that ended so horribly it dulled some of the luster.

With the ND platform, no HC should be outside of a top 15 recruiting class every year.

Wrong....you really don't know what is going on.

Ara in all honesty, really? How can you possibly believe Kelly is'nt calling plays? Its the same thing over n over! Listen to the podcast with Driskell from last week. It is spot on! The guys an analyst and he is so dumbfounded by Kelly's calls you can hear the disdain. I'm not exaggerating. I've read many of your posts but your way off.
Java i agree bro i feel exactly the same thats why it's so hard for me to keep watching. Since 88 i think I've missed maybe 10 games due to sports or work. This year i watched in entirety our wins thats it! Could'nt stomach anymore.
