How much does impact does football success have on the financial state of the university?

Forbes publishes an annual list of the highest revenue football programs, and we happen to come in at #8 in 2019’s list at $120M. Alabama, the most successful program of the past decade, grosses $134M.

Meanwhile Scott Malpass, ND’s Chief Investment Officer, has overseen the growth of the university’s endowment to $13.8B. My (admittedly amateur) comparison of endowment growth at similar universities suggests that Malpass is about $3B ahead of where an average investment officer would have ND positioned.

Football success affects us to the tune of tens of millions. It's a big fish in the ND pond. Savvy fundraising and investment are whales in that same pond, though. Just something to keep in mind when we discuss big decisions by Jenkins/Swarbrick in relation to the football team.
