On firing Bob Davie...

"A year ago at this time, I believed that we had turned the corner under Bob, and that we were prepared to reclaim our traditional standing among the nation's elite college programs," White said.
"Today, I can no longer say that."
"We are a place that's won 11 national championships," White said
"Can we win a 12th? I believe we can."
Davie went 14-9 in his last two seasons.

On firing Tyrone Willingham...

"From Sunday through Friday our football program has exceeded all expectations, in every way," he said. "But on Saturday, we struggled. We've been up and down and sideways a little bit."
"We simply have not made the progress on the field that we need to make," athletic director Kevin White said in a news conference. "Nor have we been able to create the positive momentum necessary in our efforts to return the Notre Dame program to the elite level of the college football world."
Willingham went 11-12 in his last two seasons.

On firing Charlie Weis...

"It's time to move forward because it is critical to this program and to its place in the university and college football that we compete at the highest level. That we compete for national championships."
Weis went 13-12 in his last two seasons.
-Jack Swarbrick

Now we get this...

"I take a 2 year view of the position. Last year was one of the finest coaching jobs I have seen."
How many coaching jobs have you "seen"? Please elaborate. Kelly is 14-11 in the last 2 seasons.

"Wins and losses are an important indication of where the program is, but it's not the only one. More important to me frankly are the interests of our students."
I guess Savvy would have retained Willingham?

"If there's anything that bothers me about the analysis, it's the discounting of getting to the national championship game."
I thought you take a 2 year view of the position? That was 4 years ago Jack.

While the hirings of Notre Dame's coaches have been lack luster the firings are telling. Notre Dame still wants to win championships.

Jack is playing his hand. When he found out about Brian Kelly's additional job searches he put his plan into place. His evil plan consists of using Brian Kelly like he has used Notre Dame. String him along until he finds something better. So its my theory Jack is working behind the scenes for a replacement. It would explain his reclusivness. He doesn't want to answer any difficult questions while hatching his evil plan. Here are some of the benefits to this plan...

1. Kelly may make a move. Anyone who has watched Kelly this season can see he is done. He simply doesn't want to be here. Pat Forde's report reinforces that notion. The obvious upside here is no contract buyout.

2. The process will not be rushed. Evil Jack has feelers out to gauge interest and will start with tier 1 canidates. Firing Kelly would require a swift hiring on his part. Doing it behind the scenes he can take his time and hopefully hook a big fish. This way he will avoid the 2002 Meyer scenario and will not have to settle for a Willingham type hire (see LSU this year). Worst case scenario he can't find a tier 1 coach and will have Kelly as backup plan.

3. When going after a tier 1 coach I believe the chances of landing one will be much greater once the seasons over for many reasons.

4. Recruits. String Kelly along and use his services to keep the class together. Fire him now and 50% will bail. They still may bail but if a tier 1 coach is brought in the chances of keeping the class together is much higher.

5. If no obvious upgrade is to be had maybe one will surface next year.

6. All will be forgiven. Hire a tier 1 guy and Savvy will go from the most despised AD of all time to one of the best.

I wish it were so. It seems to me that Jack has two related obstacles he is unwilling to hurdle; the cost of firing Kelly and the personal hit to his reputation for the six year extension. His salvation is Kelly getting another job, which I think he has privately supported. However, it seems apparent to me that absent this, Jack is prepared to keep Kelly while talking him up. The later requires changes going forward, and I then would expect Jack to be pretty insistent on the kind of changes widely discussed: a new DC, and new ST coach, and a new S&C coach. If Kelly does stay, I hope like hell that the rumored move to promote Elston to DC is bogus, and if not, then at least rejected by Jack. Of course, I still have hopes that Kelly accepts a job elsewhere.

Telx, To be clear this is just a theory I came up with. I do believe it to be a real possibility but I don't actually believe it. I would say your grasp of the situation to be more likely. That being the case, the BOT needs to get involved and get Jack the heck out of Dodge.

Why the hell is Jack so involved with what coaches Kelly hires? He has ZERO football or coaching experience. That much is painfully obvious. Does the guy ever smile??? Would you want to work for him?

Monkey,,,because Kelly has a history of keeping, promoting, hiring assistants that he has a Long standing relationship with, and it is apparent that changes to the coaching need to be made. Not suggesting Jack get involved in the selection, just that he demands new hires from outside the program for these three positions. Kelly needs to own his selections.

T-bob...I prefer your theory to my perspective!

I agree, the only hire Kelly has done outside his coaching tree (shrub) has been Sanford. I have zero head coaching experience but I was 100% convinced BVG had to go last year. Somehow Kelly couldn't see it. Hiring or at least wanting to hire a quality DC shouldn't be that difficult. Look for the most qualified and put a list together. A quick internet search of top college defensive coordinators in 2016 would be a good start. If BK comes up with some no name from his GVST or Central Michigan days I'd just fire him on the spot.

Not sure if true but very interesting and well thought out post.

maybe Jack is a USC fan?

Notre Dame now has the distinction of having the most
otherwise unemployable football coach in America

White definitely had a better grasp than Swarbrick on the shortcomings on the field even though he never hired the coach that brought us to elite status. I hope Swarbrick is gone before we hire another football coach.

My point is that I have zero faith in either Kelly or Jack. They're in bed together. Act like a coach and an AD. Not a CEO.

It is ludicrous that Jack is even remotely involved with hiring decisions. He's an attorney, not a football guy. Pretty obvious. He hired Kelly to do that. Let him do his job, or fire him immediately. The decision could not be more clear - to everyone but Jack.
