I thought the referees last night were especially atrocious. Good grief! Penn State was getting away with multiple offensive holdings. The two pass interference calls were close, but a little suspect to me. It also seemed like every ball spot for us would be marked the half yard to a full yard short of where we actually should’ve been.

I hope this won’t be the crew for the championship game

ticky tack calls that can be called on virtually every closely guarded pass breakup. Early on the db was riding evans like seabiscuit on a 3rd down that was obvious, no call. Multiple holds by them and probably a couple from us, but overall there were bad crucial calls that went against us. Ho hum

The second call wasn't actually a penalty IMO but it only somewhat *appeared* like PI because the ball was so underthrown. Naturally, when covering a receiver down the field, any ball underthrown will cause the defender to impede their access to the ball. With no defender, the ball would have landed two yards in front of the receiver's feet. It was almost identical to the horrible PI call against Georgia. You in essence are rewarding the QB for a terrible pass, which is ridiculous.

Also, it was akin to throwing a flag during a hail mary. It was triple coverage I believe, so with everybody in such close proximity, it's naturally going to be a little chippy. At best, it was a 50-50 call, but given how critical the play was, you do the less controversial thing and let the players play. Nobody is tuning into watch these dorky refs determine the outcome.

First holding call on Gray was legit. The late PI call was dog water. Didn't stop the receiver from going for the ball and there was minimum contact and McElroy needs to be punched in the throat.

I agree, but did they call the first one PI or holding? It was clearly holding to me. I don't necessarily think McElroy deserves to be punched, but once in awhile you can call out the refs for a bad call.

Not sure how they missed such an egregious hold. I believe the call on Gray was holding early in the route which he did. Shuler clearly committed what used to be called "face guarding" . Gotta turn your head. The rule is pretty clear.
I know the rule changed that made face guarding legal. I looked all over last night and everything I read stated it is legal. Yes, he held early in route but it had zero effect on the play. That penalty could be thrown almost every play.

Terrible refs tonight. Those were not PI's. Then they totally miss the holding on PSU.
Which one? I thought they got away with countless holdings. They missed holding on both sides.

I would love if I never had to watch this officiating crew again.

Also, what about them adding 6 seconds to the clock to end the game? Embarrassing performance all around.

This was also the same crew that had the Sugar Bowl as well -- so the odds of them getting the Championship game are small.

1st int. I understood but 2nd int was bs. Shuler made at best made minimal contact & didnt effect the play.
The spots in the 2nd half were getting ridic and I have no idea what was going on with the clock at the end of the game but that cant happen in a cfb game let alone a semifinal.
Holding is always subjective but they let both side get away with it more than they should have.

Last 2 minutes there were all kinds of clock errors. Like waiting two seconds to start the clock after the snap.

Totally agree with your take. And the clock at the end of the game was pure bs, and couldn’t understand why the tv announcers didn’t point this out. First there were 12 seconds on the clock, then adjusted up to 14; then we run two running plays and the clock wound down a total of two seconds.

He has to turn his head and look for the ball. When the ball is in the air you have to play the ball not the man. It's how officials are taught. Just how I saw it.

Big 12 crew. If OSU wins I'm guessing SEC crew. If Texas wins likely Big 10 crew.

Very happy with the outcome but that ref crew was pure armature night.

Does ANY sport have good officials?

I know you have to have a masochistic streak to be one so the population available is not great but damn.

I was just watching some highlights and in the first quarter, Leonard throws to Evans down the sideline, and it appears to me that the Penn State defender is doing exactly what Shuler did on Kizer's interception. Evans caught the ball for a big gain, so it didn't matter, but think the ref was over zealous in calling PI on Shuler because contact was minimal and the ball was under thrown.

Severely underthrown

The first PI was correct and actually called defensive holding, which was correct. The 2nd PI in the 4th QTR was flat awful. There was minimal contact and the ball was well underthrown

First PI/holding call was warranted. Refs missed numerous holding calls on PSU but also thought Wagner could have been flagged 5+ times for holding 11.

Just stop! Enjoy the win!
You probably never heard of the phrase: “All that’s needed for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing”

If you remain silent and accept bad calls without criticizing, you’re going to be prone to getting more bad calls in the future !

Without constructive criticism progress is impossible

The failure to call the holding penalty on PSU, which led to a PSU TD, instead of nullifying the gain and adding a 15 yard penalty was outrageous because it was so blatant and so visible to everyone.

No one, teams and conference refs want an independent Notre Dame to win !

Game tonight there is all kinds of NFL level holds on receivers and there are no calls.

Both those PI’s were weak.
