I know the season hasn't gone to plan. However, I am a firm believer that recruiting on the defensive side of the ball is the key to ND. The offense will not be a problem for ND to recruit. ND recruits guys like Trumbetti, Tranquil, and Greer Martini on D. These players are glorified backups on Top 5 teams. Yes we had a jalen smith a local prospect that was an elite talent. But we need a D with 4star talent into the 2 deep of every position. Kelly has been here for quite some time and D recruiting has not been great. Is it possible for ND to have a great D line with 3-4 studs sitting on the bench to replace the studs that starts? SEC is just littered with D prospects. Speed and more speed. This team is undefeated this year if we had a top 30 D.

I do not have a problem with getting some guys you know will be backups. However, they need to hit on key players that are difference makers. Like D-End, LB, and CB and Safety. We have not hit there very well. We have some guys that would be good DT unfortunately they were recruited as DE

yeah not surprisingly when we hit on those positions and had Manti, Tuitt, Nix, etc we had a great defense.

Trumbetti was a top 10 nationally ranked DE, with a good offer list. He was not developed.

Tranquil is SAM linebacker, coming off two torn ACLs, masquerading as a safety... At Michigan State he would have been a 235lb SAM backer and a pain in the ass. The kid is tough, smart, physical and two knee injuries ago, a quality athlete at linebacker. He has no business playing safety at this point. I sincerely hope that the new DC moves him to SAM. He could have as many as 3 years and he's a downhill player. He shouldn't be running in coverage with slot receivers... Personnel used incorectly quickly strips the talent from just nearly any player.

Stop.......
Just ****ing stop.

Until you've quality coaching on the defensive side of things all bets are off.

As freakish of a talent Jaylon was he was terribly underutilized.

BVG was the worst coach I've ever seen. Just atrocious.

And the names you mentioned above....

You're a tunneled vision no sense of reality fan.

Trumbetti, tranquil, and martini all showed really nice promise when they stepped in as babies. Tranquils stint shortened by injury but make no mistake they were all high energy players. A bit raw, but you just felt watching them I can't wait to see them as juniors, seniors.

Here is a glaring SAD fact of mother ****ing life at Notre Dame on defense., ,

Every single player under BVG became stagnate or regressed. Every single one. ❕
Not just the names you mentioned but everyone.
This is the reality. Sadly.

No matter the potential of a player early on,

BVG made sure they became an empty jersey out there.

P.s.

To help you understand this I'll cite you a great example.

Georgia Tech game last year Drew tranquil tackled the pitch guy repeatedly at or behind the line of scrimmage. Open field tackle mind you ...which is the hardest BTW ...he closed the gap, broke down, wrapped up and finished the tackle. Repeatedly.

One question...
Does drew tranquil tackle like that today?

Why did trumbetti create more havoc as a freshman than today?

That is insane. A position where maturing strength is paramount. You'd think the older he got the better. Unless you're under one BVG.

BVG allowed to them to play lazy, confused etc.

Every good habit they learned from pee wee
trough high school becomes an afterthought in two years under BVG.

Get a real simplified coach reiterating the basics, but they're the most important details of defense.

Tackling#1
Pursuit angles#2
Coverage#3

Do those three things text book and your defense just got mikes better.

Since the 1st Weis year, I can not recall recruiting being this 'quiet on all fronts'.
ND recruiting news is almost w/o anything news worthy.

Hopefully a few wins will create the stir needed to give life to recruiting!

Our HC sees 300 pounders guarding 160-180 pound receivers as an advantage. He is a dumb bell.

It's started. People are beginning to see or sense there are serious problems here. The future is very clouded. Recruiting will be as well. Yes, there always will be the one that is a good catch, but they are coming here because of the school, not the program or Coach 8 & 4. A win here or there will change nothing and if we lose 5 or more games...things get worse. It's Weis in his second to last season, after the Swarbrick "come to Jesus" meeting in California.

My constant mantra is it only takes a couple of big commits to change things and the perception of things.

We have not recruited well on the defensive side of the ball period for 2017,so far. iLB D.Adams and DT D. Ewell are the most noticeable . I don't know what to think !
