It has been a few days since I last did one of these, but Notre Dame coaches were in a lot of different places on Tuesday, and there's some noteworthy stuff.
So, here's what we know…
Sanford Sees 5-star LB, New Name At DE
Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Sanford was in Fresno on Tuesday. We were able to confirm that Sanford passed through Fresno Clovis West High, which is home to five-star linebacker target Caleb Kelly. We caught up with Kelly last week while in Los Angeles, and nothing has really changed. He still plans to visit for the Irish Invasion on June 19.
Something interesting to note here -- at least from our perspective -- is that the two coaches who have been in Fresno during the evaluation period to see Kelly, are Sanford and associate head coach Mike Denbrock. Usually it's defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder that sees the top defensive targets, but it appears that the staff might be taking a new approach with Kelly, which makes sense given the struggles to recruit the area in recent years.
While in Fresno, we also got word that Sanford made the rounds at Clovis Buchanan to check up on three-star defensive end Bryson Young. There appears to be some interest from Young in the Irish, but this looks like preliminary stuff from Notre Dame's end. The 6-5, 220-pound end holds offers from Michigan, UCLA and Oregon State. Michigan's coaching staff will work a satellite camp in Fresno on June 11.
BVG Evaluating Talent
Irish defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder was in the DMV on Tuesday. He offered Chesterfield (Va.) L.C. Bird three-star defensive back Jalen Elliott after watching him workout, and also dropped by Potomac (Md.) Bullis School, which is the home to Rivals100 quarterback and now Maryland commit Dwayne Haskins.
While Haskins is certainly a priority for the Irish, we're told he wasn't the focus of the trip. Instead, it was on rising junior three-star safety Damani Neal. Neal visited Notre Dame for Junior Day back on March 21 and has been invited tot he Irish Invasion. He holds an early Stanford offer and is hoping that Notre Dame extends a bid.
We also believe that VanGorder also checked up on four-star linebacker Cameron Brown, who transferred from the Bullis School to Burtonsville Paint Branch a few months ago, but we have yet to confirm. Brown has a set top 10 with Notre Dame in it right now. Maryland isn't in that group.
Elston In Ohio
Mike Elston was outside of Cleveland on Tuesday. He offered Akron Hoban three-star athlete and Michigan State commit Jonah Morris, and also inquired about Ohio State running back commit Todd Sibley while on campus.
Elite LB In Mix For Invasion?
Speaking of Elston, the recruiting coordinator and linebackers coach appears to already be working one top underclassman target. We're told that Elston had a lengthy phone call with Plano (Texas) East four-star linebacker Anthony Hines earlier this week, and that the 2017 linebacker is in the process of setting up a visit to South Bend for the Irish Invasion. Hines claims 67 scholarship offers and was at one time committed to Mississippi State.
Denbrock At IMG Academy
Irish associate head coach Mike Denbrock made his way to Florida on Tuesday. He's expected to see talent in the Sunshine State over the next few days, but he started his trip at Bradenton IMG Academy, which is home to Notre Dame running back commit Tony Jones.
