Notre Dame coaches finished the week up on the road recruiting. Blue & Gold Illustrated was able to confirm that the Irish were in Texas and California along with Florida, North Carolina and Illinois.
Here's what we know…
Denson In The 407
Notre Dame assistant Autry Denson finally made it to Orlando. After swinging by Viera High on Thursday to see Rivals250 wideout Tre Nixon, he darted across the Beachline on Friday to see a number of different prospects. Blue & Gold Illustrated was able to confirm that the running backs coach was at West Orange High, Osceola High and Oak Ridge High.
Here's who he checked up on…
3-star quarterback Woody Barrett - Notre Dame offer.
3-star wide receiver Eddie McDoom
3-star offensive tackle Stone Forsythe
3-star cornerback Carlos Becker
3-star offensive tackle Parker Braun
3-star linebacker Jonathan Jones
3-star safety Cycoby Burch
While Barrett is the only prospect on the list with a Notre Dame offer, we're told he wasn't the focus of the stop at West Orange High. Denson was there to see 2015 running backs signee Dexter Williams and also learn more about Forsythe -- a 6-7, 331-pound tackle with offers from Boston College, Duke and Kentucky.
Denson then made his way to Osceola High, where he told the coaches, that Becker had an invitation on the table to the Irish Invasion camp in June. The cornerback told Blue & Gold Illustrated however, that he likely won't visit unless a scholarship offer comes to fruition.
Oak Ridge is the home to Florida running back commit Tyrek Tisdale, but we were informed that Denson wasn't eyeing him while on campus. He was more interested in Burch and Jones. Burch said he didn't have a chance to speak with Denson -- NCAA rules don't make it easy -- but he has interest in the Irish and safety is a position of need this cycle. The 6-1, 185-pound defensive back is leaning towards Wisconsin and North Carolina right now.
Denbrock All Over Chicago Area
While Denson circumnavigated Orlando, Irish associate head coach Mike Denbrock was in Chicago -- again. Blue & Gold Illustrated was able to confirm that he was at Lake Forest Academy, Evanston High and Wilmette Academy on Friday.
Here's who he checked up on…
4-star defensive tackle Naquan Jones
3-star defensive end Thomas Schaffer
3-star defensive end Daniel Joseph
2-star long snapper John Shannon - Notre Dame commit.
The most intriguing name on that list is Schaffer, who is a 6-7, 250-pound Austrian import. He was scheduled to visit Notre Dame last month but never made the trip after plans feel through with an Adidas Showcase group. The Irish like Schaffer, but have yet to offer. He already holds bids from Stanford, Oregon, Vanderbilt and Michigan State.
Gilmore Checks In On 2 DTs
Irish defensive line coach Keith Gilmore continued his tour of North Carolina on Friday. The assistant coach rolled into Wake Forest (N.C.) High, which is just outside of Raleigh, to check up on five-star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and 2017 four-star defensive tackle Xach Gill.
We’re told that Lawrence would prefer to play football in the south and he isn’t given many schools to the north consideration, but Gill appears to be open to Notre Dame. He told Blue & Gold Illustrated that he was well aware that Gilmore was on campus, but couldn't talk with the coach because, again, he's still an underclassman.
Irish See CB Target
Waco (Texas) High three-star cornerback Eric Cuffee confirmed that Notre Dame was at his school on Friday. The Irish offered Cuffee back on March 5, and the visit like many this past week, shows he's a priority for the staff at defensive back. Cuffee said coaches from Texas were also at his school on Friday.
Wheels Up To The West Coast
Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Sanford flew to California on Friday. He's expected to make his way up and down the state next week, but started his trip in San Francisco. Rohnert Park Rancho Cotate three-star wideout Chris Taylor-Yamanhoa said Sanford was hoping to see him workout, but his high school doesn't start practice for two weeks, so that evaluation has been pushed back. There's a chance that Sanford could also see Brentwood Liberty Rivals 100 safety and California commit Shurod Thompson while in the area. He told Blue & Gold Illustrated that he's "more than" interested in Notre Dame, despite his commitment to the Golden Bears.
Canada, Eh?
Notre Dame hasn't seen Abbotsford (B.C.) High wideout Chase Claypool this evaluation period, but he said Friday that the Irish have asked for his transcripts, and he has sent them. The 6-5, 205-pound Claypool holds offers from Oregon, Rutgers and Nevada.
On Deck
- Sanford has already seen two of his top quarterback targets -- Dwayne Haskins Jr. and Hunter Johnson -- which means that Glendora (Calif.) High three-star Matt Fink is next on the list. The Irish offensive coordinator is expected to see him sometime next week.
- Irish offensive line coach Harry Hiestand has already checked up on a number of offensive line targets, but he'll fly to Florida to see another on Monday. He's scheduled to drop by Orlando Bishop Moore, which is the home to Rivals 250 offensive tackle Parker Boudreaux. Hiestand is also expected to evaluate Rivals250 tackle Stewart Reese while in the area.
The Irish are on the move … 80 + confirmed visits in 14 states.
