I know the Kelly haters will rail (no need to post Pers, I know, dude, I know, I feel your epic pain, it is okay man) but I'm excited by the kelly hires. Youth, enthusiasm, toughness and damn good recruiters. Probably too late for Polian and Long to do that much (I do expect a surprise or two) but wait until next year when they have a chance to really go after some players.

The more I read about Long, the more I like. Tough, hard working young guy who has a strong record as a recruiter. Elko is a smart young defensive mind who understands how to coach (mold/lead) college kids. Yeah we lost Stanford (and hell he may be back some day) but Long has a better record as a recuiter. And with his experience as a TE and coaching TEs -- wow, with AJ, Kmet, Brock, Smythe -- he has a hell of a lot to work with. Watching the game last night I thought -- doesn't Wimbush have the similar tools/potential as Watson (4* vs 5*, #4 vs #1?) Size-wise they are similar.... (I'm not expecting Wimbush to do it right away, but he has had two years in Kelly's system working with the QB whisperer Sanford, right?)

And if I'm Kelly I would have texted Nyles Morgan last night and said, "Dude you see what Boulware is doing? You can do that!"

Now lets close the deal with a great WR (or QB) coach. Helfrich you need an interim position (i kid, I kid)

Anyway, I know this will be a stick in the eye for all of you nay-sayers (going to be a long year for you all) but i wanted to post something positive. Go Irish.

I was excited for Sanford, OC is a title not a job at ND.

Elko on the other hand will have a chance to make a real impression.

"Yeah we lost Stanford"

Yea -- ND lost to Stanford --

but Mike Sanford was a good OC and is now a HC who may end up back at ND someday!

Another positive post being flushed done the toilet by the obsessive Kelly haters. I am excited by the hires; and especially Long because he showed me last year that he can adjust on the fly. It's something that Denbrock or Sanford didn't do well last season. I think that Kelly looked hard at all those games that ND had a chance to win in the last drive. Something had to change and so Kelly went out and found an OC that could run the spread offense, strong recruiter, reputation of player development, and in game play adjuster. When he moved to the defensive side of the ball and the offense became stagnate and couldn't close out games. Yes I am cautiously optimistic because he's hired aggressive young coaches at all four phases of the game: offense, defense, special teams, and strength and conditioning. Good effort Stu!

I am optimistic about the new hires, but truth be told, I was optimistic about the last group of new hires as well (BVG, Sanford, Gilmore, etc.)!

I believe this team will take big steps next year and could easily be 9-3 or 10-2 if Wimbush is as good as advertised and the injury bug doesn't bite areas of the team where depth is a concern.

My concern is that what used to be the minimum expectation (9+ wins) has become the ceiling for the program. Elite programs reload and "just miss" the playoffs/BCS during their down years. They don't go 4-8 and hope their fans get excited about a retooled staff.

If I belong in the "sewing circle" because that concern won't go away, then toss me a knitting needle! Go Irish!
