Playoff Format: Which do you prefer

I voted for an 8-team playoff but this might change the need for Conf Championships. Also----78 might like this----I'm starting to change my mind on playoffs greater than that. I AM a big advocate of playoffs in other divisions and they seem to work very well. BUT.......I'm now thinking that the TIME commitment/attention in FBS is just too great. Noone really cares about the others except the teams & families so they can go to school etc as normal. A ND or other top school would create so much media & fan attention as to be totally draining mentally for all. Plus exams & recruiting. So yes 8 teams is OKAY....but no more.

BEAT da iggles!!!

I'd love to see the 8 team playoff, but would like to have the first round games at the top 4's home field. It would be difficult for some fans to travel 2-3 times around the country to see their team play. Of course that just means the 5-8 teams and fans would travel that much. I just want more!

8 would be great. God forbid the Power 5 would have to play one more quality team.

I voted for an 8 team playoff. But … looking at Div III and Div II which I think have 16 team playoffs … apparently in the past there have been teams that qualified but passed because of conflicts with final exams should the team make it to the last rounds of the championship. This made me wonder how something like an 8 team playoff could impact ND.

There is no perfect way to do this. However, I think at least an 8 team playoff is doable. First in are the 5 power conference champs. Then based on some type of criteria that can be determined, 3 at large teams. Then of course it gets settled which teams get to play each other. The real issue is the total number of games that will have been played. Right now with conference championships, it's 13 or 14 games. Now your asking an additional 2 or 3 games for these schools. It's like an NFL season while still going to school full time. Again this format will have its downside but you at least get the top teams to face off and can achieve the goal of naming a true national champion.

Division 2 has a 28 team playoff, they expanded this year, they also play an 11 game schedule.

DIII plays 10 regular season games with a 32 team playoff. In the early 2000's they went to 32 from a 28 team playoff where the #1 seeds all got byes.

And amazingly we had...*gasp*... Scrimmages before the season started!?!?!? Just like HS, D2, and the NFL. Huh, but D1 still can't figure that one out.

4. 8 is too many IMO. I wouldn't hate 8 though as long as automatic berths were given conference winners.
