Phil Jurkovec is Irish! Verbal Commit 5 Star 2018

I think it's fair to say we don't get this kid without Sanford being on staff. Remember all the negative nannies ripping Kelly and predicting recruiting Armageddon when we lost Alford? Very impressed with Sanford the recruiter, and hope to see him stay on board with increasing responsibilities.
I don't question Coach Kelly's recruiting ability but his history and reputation as a Quarterback micro manager and petulant sidelines personality had to give some QB recruits pause. Tha farther he can stay from the qb position the better the program is, assuming of course there is someone on staff to do the job competently and build the necessary relationships and trust.

why would Kelly's sidelines personality have made qb recruits pause when saban at bama yells and screams just as much as did parcells of the giants along with so many other alltime great coaches

Different time, different league, different pay grade, different talent pool, for starters. No?

greengael, I would agree with you about his sideline personality his first two years at ND. Kelly is still animated at times, but hardly excessively and no more so than many other successful college coaches. He'll chew ass, QB or Linemen, etc... as needed, but he has adopted a much better persona with his QB, which might correlate to having better QBs on the field.

I agree with your post, Telx1. I would like to add that quarterbacks that come to Notre Dame are very competitive and know it is not going to be easy for them whoever the coach is. They are usually type A personalities and can handle stress better than most. Those who can't handle it wash out and usually transfer.

"Kelly is still animated at times, but hardly excessively". His off the rails behavior with Grimes is the definition of "excessive"..... Unfortunately, he has a history of pathetic/bad/embarrassing behavior which has made national news.

Has he been upgraded to a five star??

Everything I've read to date lists him as a four star. Not chopped liver,
but everyone here is calling him a five star. Just curious if this is legit
or wishful thinking?
Depends on who you ask. Most sites have not listed many 5 stars for 2018 but as the #2 overall QB, #1 dual threat and articles claiming he is a 5 star it is likely he will be a consensus 5 star unless he slips. It really depends on where you look as even 24/7 has him listed one one page as a four star with a ranking of 97 while another site says 5 star and .9968

Currently rated 9th best player in the country overall by 24/7 and there are always a lot more than 9 5 star prospects.

if women at UConn can take coach geno who is the biggest yeller and screamer of any college or pro coach then a male qb should be able to take kelly's or any other football coaches yelling from time to time

this is 2016 and in 2018 who knows who will be patroling the Irish sideline. Hopefully this is a commitment to the institution of ND. Sanford however is key!

Cool you really don't know Geno Aurriema's style at all do you?

Grimes is a known "chirper" as a player and coach. kelly lost control of his bench and then embarrassingly lost his mind. Again.......
It's interesting that you would have fired the assistant coach under those circumstances. I'm guessing you would then face a lawsuit and not do very well.....

Kelly is in total control of the program that is why he got the extension and raise.

says you. grimes was clearly out of line. there is a protocol on the sidelines. assistant strength coaches are not part of it.

Well, it's obvious that kelly lost control of his personnel/sideline and himself. It got real ugly.

One of the reasons Sanford listed for coming to ND was to learn from Brian Kelly.

not saying kelly didn't lose his cool. that happens to lots of coaches at every level. not sure how kelly is to blame for grimes stupidity. no defense for grimes actions at all. he knows his place. bet it never happens again.

It's usually good to butter up your new boss, what is said after leaving may be more revealing. Having said that I'm sure there is much for Sanford to learn from Kelly and Vice Versa.

well i'm sure you can find some former assistant coaches that have some not so nice things to say about jim harbaugh and nick saban. no head coach is perfect as they all make mistakes in things they say and do

Grimes behavior was excessive. Grimes is still on the staff and control of the sideline is in the hands of Coach Kelly( for 6 more years)

The back story to Grimes was that he already had a history of being warned by officials & was told to zip it by ND. During the game of question he had already been warned when he told an official he was effing pathetic. The official told Kelly he was about to get a 15 yarder.
He should have been escorted off the sideline & given a pink slip. There were multiple witnesses including a neutral party (the officials) so Grimes loses that battle.

Jurkovec is easily a 5 Star recruit. He only played one year of varsity so far which was enough to put him already at #1 dual threat & can only go up the overall ranks according to 247.
As far as his commitment, read the article about his decision. Very educated decision he made. He is a lifelong ND fan & his parents had to convince him not to choose ND because of fandom. He is also Catholic & very interested in ND's academics. He said even though he likes Kelly & Sanford a lot he loves Notre Dame & always has. His father said unless the Golden Dome falls down he will be in South Bend.

Offensively, ND has elite talent. Defensive....we shall see. Starters can complete, but depth is needed in the front of the D.
