It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.

Bodi - That was one of Teddy's great speeches, however not long after he became a Progressive and an advocate for greater governmental intervention into peoples lives.He became Obama with balls.

And yet TR became a vociferous critic of Taft leading to Wilson's (Democratic) victory in 1912 after the fracturing of the Republican party. A case of do as I say, not as I do?

Critics are needed to provide the other sides of issues. Politicians have to accept this, should even welcome and embrace it.

TR was very disappointed in Taft whom he had hand picked to succeed him. Taft was just a puddle of goo really. TR was the one that made the mistake of thinking he was more.
 
Bod, you are too nuanced and subtle for Pers, CVGR, and their ilk. The board would be a better place if they would just take their negativity elsewhere. I'm not suggesting that all posters should be cheerleaders for BK and the Team but you should at least be a fan of the team to post here.
 
Criticism only matters when it is constructive and when it comes from an educated source.

Perse CGVR know nothing about football. They have never played and they've never coached. They are simply known as "frustrated wannabes" or "jock sniffers" Whether it's sitting in the bleachers, on a couch or posting drivel on a message board. These individuals opinions are 100% irrelevant and 100% useless.

Been decades since I read or thought about Citizenship In A Republic, and so Bodi, thanks for the OP. Better places to discuss the pathetic state of our politics, governance and of our electorate, and the proper role of critics, etc... but I mostly like it for the context you suggest. I don't agree that you have to have played or coached football to offer legitimate views, either supportive or critical; but I do think the OP offers a thoughtful context for those of us who jump at every opportunity to criticize Kelly for every imaginable error or mistake or perceived failing within the program.

Teddy Roosevelt was a great man. History exaggerates many of his exploits (for example, he never deserved the Medal of Honor, but his son did!) and fact that today's GOP attempts to claim him is as ridiculous as anyone thinking Trump is good for America.

That said, his speech in the OP does spell out the hypocrisy of cgvr and many who troll here and all should read those words and look within.

It is a great speech for all of us including myself. I have been hypercritical of Joe Schmidt at times and I went overboard. Joe Schmidt was a warrior out there in the Arena and gave all of his blood sweat and tears while I ate popcorn and sat on my couch watching him.

*** Joe really helped us beat USC in 2013 but injuries slowed him down his last year. He had a lot of heart.
