Paul Finebaum: Maybe Time For Notre Dame To Clean House

Finebaum is never wrong. Fire Kelly and Jack and save the Irish football program.

The thing about this Finenbum guy, the ESPN commentators, and the national media in general, is they report on these ND stories without rarely, if ever, checking with ND media and insiders for details of the full story. I know this to be true because Eric Hansen and Darin Pritchet has mentioned it on their radio show more than once. For example, PTI mentions ND will vacate games, BKs job is in jeopardy, and all this with no context. Same for Chicago sports radio who gleefully report the story (and other stories over the years). Report the story....yes. Know the back story....absolutely. Don't interject your wishful commentary......definitely.

OK

heresy ? but, this is all a bit too much bad in too short a span!

perhaps Jack is correct; Kelly stays in '17 because this is a 'clean up in aisle 7' situation. No reputable coach will want in on this mess! sanctions, 4 years of abysmal recruiting, academic scandels, even multiple tragedy!

This is all Kelly's mess! Let him clean it up!

All this makes me believe Kelly will bolt; most of these coaches do! The kids pay the price and the cosch gets to walk!

What am I missing here - ND knew about this and dealt with it probably too hard internally. Now the NCAA comes out and gives an overreaching punishment and we treat that like it is something new? Like Kelly has a new blemish on his record? If they are going to let him go because the 2016 football team has horribly underachieved so be it, but this is old news.

given the environment....what will recruiting in 2017 look like? No recovery of the program will happen until and unless recruiting is stable.

Based on NCAAs findings and forfeiture of wins and his belief it starts and stops at Kelly's doorstep.

Interesting analysis.

I think Kelly should go for a number of reasons, though I don't particularly blame him entirely for the academic thing. I suppose the buck stops with him, but I'm not sure how a coaching staff can possibly monitor this type of activity.

if this involvd someone associated with the athletes in a functional role, how can Kelly bow this off as outside the program and a student on student incident? And what the hell is a student on student incident when a scholarship football player is involved? Isn't the staff clsely monitoring these guys, even micro managing there academic efforts ?

What specific action items would you suggest that ND do to avoid a situation such as this?

Paul Finebaum is an ESPN/SEC mouth piece whose job it is to gain ratings and sell advertising. I could give 2 sh*ts what he thinks.

Kelly from the very beginning talked about RKGs, So first make sure the kids recruited , beside deing good athletes are good intelligent students of good character. If they do not have those qualities , they simply are not RKG's.

You can't foresee the future. You can only judge what you see up to that point.

And, kids are what they are.

No speculation needed here as far as I see it it players caught wind of student that would do schoolwork for them. Kelly is the head of the program but it's not like he hired this person to change students grades, which would call for an immediate firing. We kind of forgot about this that's why it's come as a shock. It doesn't mean anything in the long run if you ask me. Keep the recruits you have coming in and win more than 8 games next year. Its not a scandal and not the last time something like this will happen in a collegiate setting.

Perse you said 4 years of abysmal recruiting? How so? I dont see our recruiting as the problem, nor the actual players. Rather the coaching. Fundamentals, discipline, attention to detail ie (film study) execution and technique. All hallmarks of solid coaching to championship caliber. ND exhibits few if any of these traits with Kelly.
I dont know what a head coach at ND goes through on a day to day that makes it so much more challenging than at other schools. What i do know is that they all basically agree they were'nt ready! If OSU and Michigan can go out and hit home run hires. I find no reason whatsoever we cant find a capable coach. Hell Tressel, Miles have championship rings to there credit, and are just waiting to see who wants there services. Much better options than 2010. If we get the right guy? The players will not be a liability!

Well stated! Just listen to the huddle

Notre Dame should part ways with Kelly , Swarbrick and anyone else they want. Clean house and put out a statement.
"Notre Dame stands for a commitment to excellence in all matters on and off the field , in and out of the classroom. Over the past several years things have happened contrary to that commitment. As of now, we at Notre Dame will recommit our institution to strive for excellence in all we do athletically and academically. We will not settle for, nor except less from all who are involved in university matters. Beginning today we will find a coach and athletic director who have integrity and a common goal of striving for excellence while maintaining that integrity personally and professionally. We will recruit student athletes who understand that they will be challenged academically. There will be no excuse for failure. If that means missing out on some elite athletes, so be it. We believe we can still compete for championships and maintain academic excellence. It takes a special player to play at the University of Our Lady. We at Notre Dame do things one way, that's the right away. So even though the university is going through a trying time, we will rise above all negativity and become better and stronger than ever. "

If I'm in charge that's what I would say on Tuesday after Kelly and Swarbrick are launched on Monday.

Not a fan of Finebaum . But he does think Notre Dame will not be relevant under Kelly . This year ,ND has regressed . Swarbrick will not be able to keep Kelly unless there is a BIG turnaround in 2017 .it is hard to see it playing Navy, Michigan State ,USC, Georgia , ,North Carolina, Miami, Stanford . These teams will give us fits . Plus we play Miami of Ohio , North Carolina State , Temple ,BC, Wake Forest and can one of these teams upset us?

Yes we had more talent than most of the teams we played this year (2017), But we lost a lot from 2015 ,A. Jones ,J. Smith. Sheldon Day , K. Russell , Shumate , Stanley , Carlisle, Robinson, Brown, N. Martin, Elmer , Okwara, Fuller, Redfield . Really good players . And no one has really stepped up on defense this year ,maybe N. Morgan , ? Jaron Jones got better with each game .

Wonder how we will improve in 2017?

Very well stated, though I'm not as sure about getting rid of Jack.

Why in the world would anyone listen to let alone quote this bigoted idioc dirt bag?

Agree

He is a football coach not a baby sitter. I'm sure if a player had questions he would help but his focus is an should be football

Finebum is the mouthpiece of the SEC and Alabama. His opinion isn't worth a plug nickle around here.
I totally agree! On matters of SEC he's an "expert" but he doesn't know much outside this realm.

DIP
being a football coach is like surrogate parent, and parenting is a 24/7/365/forever thing!
4 yrs ain't that long and usually 80% of the kids are gonna be lil or no problem. Just identify the other 20% and stay on them!

I do not agree
His focus should be on football. Football is not a long time........for the player, but the coach no. I'm sure if there was an issue he would listen, and then send the player through the proper channels

Bullshit. He's the football coach, not a parent, and he can't and won't know everything a kid is doing. As, BTW, is the case with parenting.

Happy Thanksgiving All.

Entertain this idea (defense):
- Nearly all freshman defensive backfield (will be more experienced next year)
- Players playing out of position (Tranquil, Tillery (DT vs DE))
- Morgan should've been playing more last year
- 3 years of learning a s**t defensive scheme

While I'm providing excuses there is blame to be put on the coaches. Namely BK needs to check his ego and re-evaluate his offensive approach. This "we are a shotgun offense and deal with it" is not going to cut it. If DeShone doesn't fumble the damn snap last week they beat VT. How many times have they failed in a short yardage situation because they are lined up 5 yards behind the los? Last year when they scored the TD against Stanford did you think DK was gonig to PA bootleg? I didn't and neither did Stanford as you're more unpredictable under center. BK needs to ride or die with Mike Sanford next year. As one of the worst politicians of recent says "What's the worse that can happen?"

there is a third option for BK to riding or dying next year....he can be somewhere else.
