I was a dutiful Cub Scout, and then Boy Scout. I can still recite all the mottos and creeds (a scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous....).
For the most part, it was an amazing experience; one that I will always treasure. We had a great Scoutmaster named Bill B. We learned a lot from him, but more importantly, we had fun. Camping, skiing, even community service projects. Bill made them all fun. And as a result, Troop 6 had no equal.
Then, a bad thing happened. Bill got really sick and had to step down. He was replaced by an old boring dude. I don't remember his name, but this dude had an entirely different idea of what a troop should be. Way more regimented to the point of being Gestapo-like. I could go on, but suffice to say it wasn't fun anymore. A whole lot of kids either quit or transferred to a different troop.
Within a year, Troop 6 was gone. Lack of interest.
Sound familiar?
