Twitter world is abuzz about the latest from ESPN. They pulled the announcer that was scheduled to call the William & Mary vs Virginia game. Why? Because his name is Robert Lee. According to ESPN, they felt it was the appropriate thing to do because of the tragedy that took place last week.

I guess ESPN feels the public would confuse this Asian announcer with a Confederate General.

You are a racist nazi for not realizing that this Asian announcer's name is hateful and I no longer feel safe on this board. I'm not going to work tomorrow.

LOL. I must plead ignorance and ask for forgiveness from the ever vigilant Political Correctness police. I will sign up for a sensitivity training class the first thing tomorrow.

And, is it African Americans who are making these decisions? No, it's white people, just like the vast, vast, vast majority of the "intellectuals" who constitute the PC police, who are trying to tell the rest of us, including African Americans, how we should think.

Enough of this crap, already. Way past the point of "enough". Yes, let's not have an Asian guy with the last name of Lee announce a CFB game. It'll just dredge up the pain of a war that ended 152 years ago.

I can hear the conversation now: "Sorry, Robert. Maybe you can roll with your middle name next time."

So to avoid potentially embarrassing itself it definitely embarrassed itself. Nice job!

Lol great point it's always stupid white leftists.

Not that it matters at all as this is the most ridiculous thing ever, but he does use the nickname The General, I only know that because he announced Siena hoop games for like 5 years. He is a good announcer

Yes,damn leftists not wanting statues of people who fought against the US so that they could own black people. How dare they!
You are aware that 44% of black people surveyed are in favor of leaving said statues up versus 40% who favor taking them down, right? I haven't given it enough thought to have a position on the topic and I don't agree with labeling people "stupid" or otherwise calling them names, but this issue isn't cut and dried even among African Americans.

It is incredibly frustrating when there is serious crap going on and things like ESPN go and do something sooo stupid and distracting.

Sorry, but not having statues of men who fought against the United States in order to own black people seems pretty cut and dry to me.

Also, time to ban the Condom mascot Traveler because it's the same name as Robert E Lee's horse Traveller.

Need to get rid of all statues and icons to

FDR imprisoned hundreds of thousands of American citizens. Passed the New deal on a caveat by the Democrats to exclude all blacks from work and housing and unions

Robert Byrd, after all he was a leader and recruiter in the KKK

Bill Clinton and Al Gore used campaign posters and other items cloaked in the Stars and bars.

Al Gore Sr was a segregationist and voted against the civil Rights act even fillibustered it.

Antifa is the new paramilitary arm of the Democrats replacing the old paramilitary branch: The KKK

Replace the Democratic party, they were the traitors who fought for succession, formed the KKK, enacted Jim Crow laws. Which by the way were copied nearly word for word by the Nazis or Socialists national workers party and used as the laws to strip Jewish citizens of Germany and the occupied lands of their rights. Only removing black for Jew.

Planned Parenthood started by a racist who believed in eugenics and abortion of lesser people's. Also what the Nazis liked and implemented.

And on and on and on.....

You know only about 6% of southerners ever owned slaves, don't get me wrong I'm glad they lost the war and the south is still part of the U.S. but states being able to leave the union was built into the constitution if they felt their rights were being trampled on. Like I said I'm glad they lost but slavery wasn't the main reason they wanted to leave the union they were close to abolishing it themselves anyway.

You can disagree with their cause--I certainly do, although I don't know what I'd have thought 150 years ago, but the vast majority of southerners didn't own slaves. To them, the issue was states rights, admittedly the biggest "right" of which was the ability to decide the issue of slavery on the state level. Until the conclusion of the Civil War, there wasn't a "The" United States. There were, as the Declaration of Indepnedence said, "these" United States. In other words, it wasn't at all clear even to the framers of that document whether we had an indissoluble Union or not. I believe we did and do, but lots of people of goodwill disagreed on that point. The monuments are to those who fought valiantly even if we disagree with their cause. These monuments are nothing like a monument to SS troops for the extermination of Jews, to attempt to draw a parallel with a more recent and more monstrous and therefore indenfensible cause.

how much did you think about those statues while Obama was in office? How much did you think about them before the media told you to think about them .... please point me in the direction of posts you made anywhere on the internet about those statues prior to the last 3 months ....

Robert E Lee was against secession, Stonewall Jackson was born in a poor family that never own slaves and even taught one how to read and write. Majority of the confederates soldiers who fought and died didn't or never own slaves, just like not all Germans who fought in WW2 were Nazis.

Know your damn history snowflake.

I'll bet you 75% of the population doesn't even know where they are located, and over half didn't even know they existed.

Exactly.....Lincoln wanted Lee to run the Union army but he wanted to defend his state of Virginia. Snowflakes offend me.....they should be removed as well.....

And where does the censorship and revisionist history stop, in your oh so enlightened opinion? When is it enough? At what point are there zero FEELINGS hurt?

It doesn't end with the Southern Democrat traitors.

Right now movement is afoot to remove Washington and Jefferson and even Lincoln! In Philly Frank Rizzo because he was perceived to be a racist. Oh and he was a Democrat. Also Columbus statues getting vandalized (does this mean O$U are racist?) Need to get rid of Socrates and Aristotle both owned slaves.

It will never end, including our founding documents...

There are calls to add housing, food and of course healthcare to the Bill of Rights while of course removing the 2nd amendment and also the first, or adding a caveat that "hate speech is excluded. Well who pray tell defines hate speech? Is it kneeling during the national anthem or holding the decapitated head off a sitting POTUS. NO, of course not. It's me writing this.

I think you're joking. But it's impossible to tell anymore. Clarify?

I don't care that David Duke was born probably a hundred fifty years after Duke University was formed....the name Duke is offensive.

As a matter of fact, I am now calling for the Federal Government to set up regional committees for name approval.

Say you want to name your son or daughter or a new road or a school or a street, or a puppy. You simply fill out a name approval form and if it goes through the committee, with no opposition, then you get the right to use the name.

Problems solved.

It truly is amazing how the lefty media is so quick to not try and "offend" the minority. I pretty much gave up watching news networks because I was getting irritated about what was going on. Now it's completely infiltrated my sports programming. Somewhere out there is a world where I can live in that I won't have to worry about what snowflakes get offended.

Curious. How it is cut and dry now, but was not an issue before worth protesting about?

I am not a person that buys into conspiracy theories, but it is hard not to see that the far left is trying to stir this pot, and the media is on board.

There are a lot of good points being made in this thread. These are trying times for our country and one of the reasons (the major reason?) is because of too many people not being willing to listen and to make their points in a well-reasoned and respectful fashion. This is true in many issues and on both/all sides of the social and political spectrum. Let us not engage in name-calling and insults and defensiveness in this thread.

While I can't stand the PC left thought police and think the crusade to remove confederate statutes is
wasted energy that could be better directed at education and community involvement, you do have to ask yourself why, for example, Germany isn't littered today with symbols of the Third Reich, or why Poland removed statues of Lenin and other communists when the Soviet Union fell.

Fact is, these confederate statutes were mostly erected in the Jim Crow and Civil Rights eras (coincidence I'm sure) to venerate the leaders of an incredibly violent, armed insurrection against the United States, waged for the sole purpose of retaining the right to own "lesser" human beings as chattel. And while they lost the military conflict, the spirit of that hateful time still permeates through the South today like an intellectual contagion, keeping the fire of that war alive for future generations and bolstered by physical reminders like these statues. So complain about the thought police all you want, and I'll join you in mocking ESPN for this present stupidity, but there is literally no good and valid rationale for the continued existence of those statues.
