O/T Father Hesburgh Has Passed Away

RIP Father Hesburgh.

He surely accomplished a lot in his lifetime. He will be missed.

He was a great man. I am proud that I got to meet him on several occasions including when, as freshmen, a friend and I climbed the fire escape to his office in the Administration Building late one night and interupted him. By then it had become something of a tradition--for students to climb up there and knock on his window. He gave us five minutes of his time, but asked us to let him get back to work. I remember him telling us that he liked to go to his office at night to avoid being disturbed and that guys like us were not helping him.

Last time I saw him was in spring of 2003 when I stopped in campus coincidentally just before the Trustees were getting read to meet and encountered him leaving the Grotto on his way to one of the meeting. He looking fit as could be.

As I was leaving campus, I bumped into Father Malloy, Father Jenkins, and the head of the Trustees, whose name I forget.

Truly a great man. There is a big void in the Notre Dame family today. God Bless Father Hesburgh.

At 9:30 last night ( Thursday night) I just finish reading God, Country and Notre Dame, and went to bed thinking what a great Man this was. Woke up this morning and saw that Fr Ted died that very evening, what a coincidence !

I wished I could have had the pleasure to have met such a MAN.

Rest in Peace Father, a life well lived for so many.

We all thank you.

Grew up in a family of ND Football fans who thought Father Ted was anti football, and was fortunate to discover his greatness as I matriculated to adulthood. He stood for all that makes ND special and unique among all universities.

RIP Father Hesburgh. He was an amazing leader of the university for many years and will be greatly missed.

I once read his autobiography - "God, Country, Notre Dame". He wrote it shortly after he retired, around 1990. Very inspirational book.

Fr. Hesburgh was a towering figure who left an indelible mark on ND. Another great ND figure Charles Rice a long time professor of Law passed away the day before Fr. Ted.

Father Ted Hesburgh, a great teacher, a wonderful priest, a dynamic leader and most of all a truly good human soul. RIP!

Notre Dame was forged by Legends and "Hesburgh steel".

His divine spiritual work and vision will stand the test of time.

Notre Dame and Father Hesburgh forever....

God bless him.

Peace in Christ.

RIP Father Ted. I am curious as the whether our athletic teams will wear a patch on their uniforms/helmets for the current and following seasons. Many world dignitaries will be at the funeral I am certain.

Tough week to be a Domer. That said, Father Hesburgh was an exemplary man of his generation and a loyal servant of God. His landmark accomplishments on civil rights, immigration reform and global solidary have left an indelible mark on not only the University of Notre Dame but the world. Serving as an adviser to nine United States Presidents he had a vital role in influencing public policy as well. His enduring legacy of justice and peace will be forever woven into the fabric of Notre Dame. Thank You Father Ted, God Bless and rest in peace.

I find it interesting that a week after Father Hesburgh's death, this thread has only a couple dozen replies. Tells me something about the changing demographic of participants on this board. I bet 10 years ago, there would have been 200 comments or more.
