Jimmy Johnson certainly did everything in his power to rub ND's nose in the dirt in '85. Despite being an excellent football coach, he had a strong anti-intellectual streak and I believe also had that Southern anti-Catholic thing as well.

I do, however, remember two games when I thought ND tried to run it up. One was 1977 when we destroyed Georgia Tech. There had been bad blood the year before when they upset us and Devine seemed intent on getting even.

The second was 1992 against BC. Holtz called a fake punt with a comfortable lead early in the second half and then put the first-string defense back in to try to preserve the shutout when BC drove for a meaningless score late in the game. I always believed that game gave BC the impetus it needed to upset us in 1993.
The GA Tech game in 1977 wasn't about them upsetting us in 1976 in Atlanta, it was about some ugly anti-Catholic things that went on during the 1976 game involving Tech fans behind the ND bench. And you are right, I think we put up 69 on them in South Bend in 1977.

The anti-Catholic shit was the next year, 1978, when their fans pelted our team with fish, potatoes and a few empty whiskey bottles. Devine took the field to the middle of the field to protect the players. In 76, Pepper Rodgers, the GT coach, who apparently did not like Devine, said stuff about how slow and out of shape we were.

Maybe I'm confusing my years. I know that in the '76 game GA Tech had a running back playing QB and did not attempt a single forward pass, yet somehow managed to beat us. I am guessing you are right, the ugly game was '78. So Devine, being as prescient as he was, blew them out in '77 because of what was going to happen in '78.:)

That game was a classic school-yard bully picking on the fat kid. Guess who the fat kid was.

Interesting little tidbit: I remember watching a history of rock 'n'roll show, in which Janis Joplin talked about how she was bullied in high school in Port Arthur, Texas. Later, I read an interview with Jimmy Johnson who said he was one of the boys who picked on her. Didn't surprise me.

I can't bring myself to dislike the current Miami team. I think their turnover chain is pretty funny, actually, because I think they are laughing at themselves and their past reputation as thugs.

I don't think Miami bullied ND because of fat. The Irish were more like Martin Prince.

Yeah, I remember it well. It was pissing matches between coaches in '76. ND ran it up in '77, and then GT fans responded to that blowout in '78.

First of all, we were a "passing" team, and did have in some 2nd & 3rd team players; secondly, I don't think he was trying to humiliate Faust, but do agree that he wanted to humiliate ND as a whole. Admittedly, JJ had a killer instinct. Most alums of the U appreciated the fact that he was an excellent X & O football coach, but didn't care for him personally. I know I didn't. He hated the gigs he had @ alum & Hurricane Club functions. He would make a brief speech and immediately leave, never lingering to talk with us like Coach Snelly did. Erickson did also, but we later found out it was to get free booze!
I am an alum of the class of 75. Cant stand U of M football. I went there when roids were the rage... players didn't go class much... the players as a whole were okay. Ruben Carter stayed at the Teke house one summer. Real nice guy for a big man. A few defensive players were dick heads. I got a few dislikes for outwardly rooting for the Irish... too bad... there were football dorms then... lots of drugs... always trouble.... then it got worse. No class with Johnson...

After the 19076 game, Pepper Rodgers went public with the assertion that the ND defense was "a bunch of fat cats" and slow. So, when Tech came to ND in 1977, Devine did everything he could to rub Pepper's nose in it.
