November 30th 1985, Miami 58 Notre Dame 7

It was disgraceful and I’ve never forgotten it.
I watched it as a 9 year old kid and I’ve hated Miami ever seen.

Painfully it got Notre Dame to wake up and led to greatness with Lou Holtz.

Ara Parshegian was very angry and I believe calling the game on CBS and famously said from these ashes we will rise.

This season is dedicated to ARA so this game is a must win.

It’s always a must win. Sun Bowl or not.

Losing to them isn’t an option.

I was upset about the 1964 loss to USC which killed Ara's and the boys title hopes. Finally, that loss was avenged just a few weeks ago....in my mind. The current roster never even considered the 1964 game as a jumping off point to beating the Trojies on that beautiful October 21st evening.

Might be a good game to push to motivate our guys. Need motivational edge for games like this.

This strikes me as the 4th tough game in a row although I didn't expect WF to be that tough. I think our team went into that game assuming we would win and packed up too early. They were probably thinking about Miami from halftime on.

Interestingly enough Lou Holtz didnt fare much better in Miami. Considering the talent we had I believe we were shut out in 1989. Playing down there in front of a hostile crowd in the humidity is no easy task. I think the key is dont turn the ball over and fight hard to avoid momentum swings. Multiple players should play early to keep everyone fresh for the 4th quarter.

Never ever should Notre Dame forget this day. Ever!! Today's players need to know what happened and play like it's the last time they will ever play. Go Irish!!!

Candidly, I would imagine that our players don't care about 1985 (nor, probably, should they). If they're not motivated by the fact that if they win out, they are likely in the CFP, then nothing else is going to help them.

Meh, these kids on either team don't care, nor should they. They aren't fans. They're current players. They are playing for each other and trying to make it to a national championship this year. Both teams. What happened 32 years ago doesn't mean anything to them.

It was a tough weekend I. 1985.

First the Irish lost embarrassingly to Miami then the Dolphins squeaked by the Bears for the only loss in the 1985 season. Jimmy Johnson was then and is now a bum and I agree the players should remember this game and beat on Miami accordingly.

That game was more than the score itself. That game was a university intentionally to not only embarrass the team but the entire University if Notre Dame and everything it stands for. Just listen to the smug players, coaches and media talk about ND. That's why I detest everything about Miami. I know those that like Miami don't care what anyone thinks. But that doesn't change the fact that the 1985 game should never be forgotten.

I agree with this - not sure BK will have to look past the importance of the present situation. At this point in time, this game is all that matters and falls in line with his "every game is elimination" for them. To me, I am sure they will be getting a dose of "play like we did on D vs WF this week against Miami, and the Playoff dream is finished."

I am excited for the game, and I think our young men will be ready. Go Irish, beat Miami!

Agreed. Saturday should be enough. I would think that 'remember what happened to some guys who wore the same jersey as you by some guys who wore the same jersey as them 30 years ago and thus before you were born' means absolutely nothing.

Toby, haven't we beaten USC like 25 times since 1964? What makes 2017 finally your vengeance game?

Because there was a ton of hype about the 2017 game. USC still had a lot going for them. ND was definitely in the hunt. USC had the Heisman QB candidate. Both teams ranked. It was the perfect night. 2005 would have been "that" game but.....4th and nine. Others may have other wins over USC that is the more satisfying to them.

88, 89 and 2012 come quickly to mind.

Yeah, but a 70 degree prime time evening knocking the hell out of Trojie and the Heisman candidate and made non believers believers does it for me.

Jimmy Johnson vs. Gerry Faust (One of them won a national championship and back to back Superbowls and the other was a decent high school coach)

Brian Kelly vs. Mark Richt (this is a more competitive matchup)

I like our chances on Saturday. Go Irish!

Forget the players, 95% of the people in Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday won't remember the 1985 game. They barely remember the last time Miami was any good.

Just for the record....Coach Faust coached Cincy Moeller High School for 18 years. 174 wins. 17 losses. 2 ties. 7 unbeaten seasons. 4 mythical national titles. That's slightly better than decent.

That game was a classic school-yard bully picking on the fat kid. Guess who the fat kid was.

Interesting little tidbit: I remember watching a history of rock 'n'roll show, in which Janis Joplin talked about how she was bullied in high school in Port Arthur, Texas. Later, I read an interview with Jimmy Johnson who said he was one of the boys who picked on her. Didn't surprise me.

I can't bring myself to dislike the current Miami team. I think their turnover chain is pretty funny, actually, because I think they are laughing at themselves and their past reputation as thugs.

The revenge for the 1964 game was Paid In Full on Nov 26, 1966 in the L.A. Coliseum 51-0.
The truth is there's not enough vengeance on this earth to satisfy what happen on Nov 30, 1985. Jerry Faust deserved better than a 58-7 beat down. I hope we decimate the bastards Saturday night. I like to think that butt whipping on October 21st was settling the score for Nov. 28, 1970.

I honestly don't understand why the ND fans, Coach AP and even Brent Mushbugger were so upset. ND has put up huge numbers against other teams over the years and this time you simply got to experience being on the receiving end. I do know that your team will be playing in an extremely hostile and LOUD environment this Saturday.

We lost 27-10 in 1989 at Miami.

Ara my good pal, I wasn't at the '66 game so, as much as it was enjoyable to this 13 year old at the time, the win this season was a win made in Heaven for me. Being there in the absolute beautiful weather. The night atmosphere in our gorgeous stadium, loud and full of "grit". The students were incredible. The campus as magnificent as ever, and of course the game. Walking back to the White Lot and seeing the Dome all lit up would make a grown man weep. Everyone has their personal favorite win over USC and I respect that. Mine was October 21, 2017.

Because ND was never throwing deep in those games. There were literally games ND was running out of bounds to not score again. Jimmy Johnson said the reason they kept throwing was because no lead is ever safe. He's a scumbag liar.

It had absolutely nothing to do with the score, it was about a genuinely good guy, who was trying his best to deal with his failure, and already being fired, in as dignified a way as possible, getting his faced rubbed in the dirt and his teeth kicked in to a totally unnecessary degree. And Jimmy Johnson and the Canes overtly loving every minute of it. Trust me, if Mark Richt is the coach in 1985, Miami plays every kid on the roster, runs a pure vanilla offense for the last 20 minutes, and is happy to win 40-7, or something like that. And nobody ever mentions it again.

Now, it's not the winning teams obligation to stop playing, and if you don't want them scoring, then play better defense. But any coach or athlete that's ever been in that situation, like Ara, knows there's a way to win your game and do so without needing to humiliate the coach on the other sideline. And Miami was clearly trying to humiliate Gerry Faust.

They tried to humiliate everyone they played. I've never see a program with so many headcases with self esteem problems. The Canes now are a great program. Duh U years were filled with jackholes with completely messed up values.

First of all, we were a "passing" team, and did have in some 2nd & 3rd team players; secondly, I don't think he was trying to humiliate Faust, but do agree that he wanted to humiliate ND as a whole. Admittedly, JJ had a killer instinct. Most alums of the U appreciated the fact that he was an excellent X & O football coach, but didn't care for him personally. I know I didn't. He hated the gigs he had @ alum & Hurricane Club functions. He would make a brief speech and immediately leave, never lingering to talk with us like Coach Snelly did. Erickson did also, but we later found out it was to get free booze!

I've seen ND get beat pretty badly by a few teams 1974 at USC 55 to 24.
FSU beat ND 37 to 0. Michigan beat ND 38 to 0. There are more. Yes, ND beat teams by big margins also. But never ever in all the years I've watched ND football, did any team run up the score with the sole intent of humiliating the University. I watched that game and that is exactly what Miami did. That was as classless a win as I ever saw. ND never went out of the way to embarrass any opponent they played like Miami did to them. But of course that game is history and has no bearing on the up coming game. So here's to a great game, a hard fought game but a game with good sportsmanship and mutual respect. It still is possible to play hard but play with dignity. Go Irish!!

tkirish, excellent post. I agree.

First of all, we were a "passing" team,

C'mon, man. They were completely incapable of running the ball at all? Up by that many points, it was impossible to run it because they were a "passing team"? On their last offensive series of any game, they physically couldn't take a knee? They had to throw it even in those scenarios?

I'm not sure why you're arguing it. Your coach readily admitted they kept trying to score using the lame excuse of "well, other teams came back against us, so we just had to make sure that didn't happen again."

You were a passing team? Apparently you were a punt blocking team too. Johnson went for and got the punt block with the Cains up 40. I hope ND beats the Cains by 50. My prediction is: There are 35,000 fans left in the stadium midway through the third quarter and they're all wearing gold and blue.
ND 58 Cains 7

"Admittedly, JJ had a killer instinct."

yes -- Jimmie had a killer instinct, and he passed that on to his players -- all good coaches should do that.

But, what JJ did was to rub ND's collective face in the dirt when the game was well in hand -- there is NO NEED to block a punt up 40 in the 3rd quarter, and there is NO need to continue to pass the ball downfield -- unless you want to simply humiliate someone. I heard a comment from JJ that he never took his foot off the gas because of heart-break losses (Maryland and BC) -- those games were a lot more competitive than this ND game ever was. There was simply no need for what Miami and JJ did that day --

Jimmy Johnson certainly did everything in his power to rub ND's nose in the dirt in '85. Despite being an excellent football coach, he had a strong anti-intellectual streak and I believe also had that Southern anti-Catholic thing as well.

I do, however, remember two games when I thought ND tried to run it up. One was 1977 when we destroyed Georgia Tech. There had been bad blood the year before when they upset us and Devine seemed intent on getting even.

The second was 1992 against BC. Holtz called a fake punt with a comfortable lead early in the second half and then put the first-string defense back in to try to preserve the shutout when BC drove for a meaningless score late in the game. I always believed that game gave BC the impetus it needed to upset us in 1993.
