Notre Dame held a 40-minute workout this afternoon that was open to the media. In addition to Mike Brey providing an overview after practice, I was able to speak with John Mooney, Prentiss Hubb, Robby Carmody and new video operations and recruiting coordinator Scott Martin, a former MVP under Brey. I'll have those features scattered throughout the next week.

• Because Rex Pflueger is in an intense Masters Program that has him in class through at least 4 p.m. (couldn't have played anyway while rehabbing his ACL tear from last December), Nik Djogo might not be available until October following labrum surgery this spring, and sophomore Chris Doherty resting a sore knee, only seven players were involved in individual drills and then 3 on 3 full-court and half-court action.

• Believe it or not, the shooting star of the workouts was sophomore point guard Hubb, who converted .324 from the field and .263 as a freshman last year while coming back from an ACL tear and getting thrown to the wolves. Hubb was 7 of 7 in the full court and half court action, converting both threes, a pull-up 18-footer, and also made some strong drives and finishes, along with some good back cuts.

• John Mooney shed about 10 pounds to aid his mobility, and it is noticeable. One of the best plays in the workout was when sophomore Nate Laszewski appeared to be all alone for a dunk while driving down the base line when Mooney came out of nowhere from the weak side and pinned the attempt against the board.

• Carmody played fearlessly even though he had a brace on his left shoulder from his December surgery. He made a terrific, diving save of a loose ball in which he crashed hard on his chest (and almost his face), and also took a charge. He drove and finished assertively, but his shooting stroke does need to come back, and he admits the brace has thrown him off a bit in that area. He also missed two of his three free-throw attempts while the rest of the team went 17 of 18 (with Hubb having one of his rare misses on this day).

• Brey is looking to make the 6-10 Laszewski not just a perimeter roamer as a stretch four but also take the ball down low. On several occasions he took his man off the dribble and finished, and converted with shots while posted up in the paint area.
