The Irish handed the 4-0 Zags their first defeat on Thanksgiving afternoon and will face the Rutgers-Drake winner tomorrow night in round 2, with a Saturday contest likely against either No. 8 Oregon State or No. 10 South Carolina.

Brianna Turner (16 points and 10 rebounds) and Jessica Shepard (14 points, 11 rebounds) both had double-doubles, while Arike Ogunbowale continued a fairly typical pattern of slow first halves before detonating in the second. She was 1 of 7 from the floor in the first half but 7 of 12 in the second to finish with 21 points.

The Irish controlled the boards (50-33) and shot just over 45 percent from the floor (30 of 66) while limiting Gonzaga to 36.8 percent (25 of 68). Here are the top three storylines.

1. Jordan Nixon on concussion protocol
The freshman point guard sat out the game, so Jackie Young — one of the most versatile players in the game — handled most of the point guard duties, while freshman Abby Prohaska was the fifth starter. Young had 14 points on 7 of 12 shooting and handed out a game high 8 assists to go with 5 rebounds.

2. Freshman Katlyn Gilbert shines off the bench
Muffet McGraw said two days ago that Gilbert was beginning to come on in the practices and would begin to see more action in the Showcase. She added a huge spark off the bench against the Zags with 14 points, shooting 5 of 8 from the floor and 4 of 5 from the foul line, to go with 5 rebounds.

3. Three-point shooting not a factor for now
Without Marina Mabrey (quadriceps injury), the 4-0 Irish are lacking in this area but are good enough inside and with their passing to not have to lean on it. They were 1 of 6 beyond the arc versus the Zags and are 8 of 32 this year (25 percent).
